I hate posting long stuff like this, and sorry for that. Executive summary would read "put alnico cream in maz 18nr combo, played with old strat, and can't believe how good that sounds, and everywhere in the room to boot".
...
I pulled out my MAZ18nr2 combo, put an Alnico Cream in it and did a dumb video. Amp was sitting at basically ear height at the time. I didn't buy the speaker for that amp, but thought it would be fun to try. Anyway, started to get ready for the next thing and before putting the maz away, I put it on the floor, fired it up, and holy crap does it sound good. Then tried my old strat through it, and holy crap *4, does that thing sound fantastic. Then tried my sg with it and why I'm posting this question...
The general headroom/volume of the 18, particularly with single coils is, I think, about as perfect as you get playing with a real band. Kind of in the sweet spot at that volume where the amp is working. I realize the 38 has more power headroom, but I seem to remember seeing something about the reverb models have a little less gain, which I think would be helpful for the clean humbucker scenario, but it looks like the 38 doesn't have the reverb option. So the 38, does the preamp function exactly as my 18 except the output section has more headroom?
Just kind of wondering because my in the room experience had me dumbfounded once again. I could walk anywhere in the room, like have it to my back 2 feet away or be 10' directly in front of it or anywhere on any angle and it almost sounds exactly the same no matter where I go. I was just kind of wishing I had that same headroom with the humbuckers. I could turn down the preamp, but it wasn't the same feeling. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks.
