I’ve had greenbacks in a old Marshall 4x12 and they were glorious, but have never heard them in open back or semi open back cabs. I have a semi open 1x12 and a semi open 12/10 I was thinking of trying one in. I was trying to research a little and found several unfavorable opinions about them in anything but closed back cabs. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

I much prefer them in a closed cab, and driven hard enough to have some "thump". You don't get that with an open back.

I have one in an AC15 that came that way. It's ok, and I haven't tried any other speaker in that amp. That amp into my GB 4x12 sound way better, but every amp I plug into that sounds way better to me. I will say the G12h in my MAZ combo sound fantastic to me, but I think that's as much has how they designed the cab and baffle board as much as the speaker itself.
Maybe put another way, I could put a g12h in my fender deluxe reissue and I"m pretty sure I'd still hate that amp as much as I did before. If you buy one and try it and don't like it, it's not like it's the end of the world because those are great speakers and you can hang on to it and it will come into use somewhere down the road.

While I do prefer the sound of closed back cabs....especially with the greenbacks....sometimes it's just not feasible to have a closed back. The best example is on small stages in clubs. You'll be set up with the speaker at your ankles. You'll have a very difficult time hearing as the sound just blasts past your feet and out into the room. The people directly in front of your amp will be blasted away, while you complain about not hearing yourself.
You need the open back so the sound comes out the back of the cabinet, bounces against the wall and fills the stage area.

I've got a greenback variant in a Marshall-inspired 1x12 combo. Sounds great. As John said above, sometimes it's just not feasible. And other times, the Greenback is "the right" speaker for an amp, regardless of whether it's in a closed-back cab, or in an open-back combo. (Like the Z-Wreck Jr. open-back 1x12 combo, which comes stock with a Greenback and sounds amazing.)

I have Greenbacks in an open back 2x12. I think they sound awesome. I have a 4x12 with greenbacks too. They sound great in the 4x12 too.
Give it a shot.

My Maz Jr came with a Greenback. I think it sounds pretty good. Also, I would not argue with the views above regarding closed back vs open. I'll second the "Give it a shot".

I'll also add that you 'found unfavorable opinions'...in your research. research=internet....and we know that guitar players LOVE to give their opinions over the internet. So someone else doesn't like it? They could be an idiot with a tin ear. Whether it's good/pleasing or not is subjective. There is no right or wrong answer. Your ears are the only ones that matter.
Summary= take internet opinions with a grain of salt. Greenbacks have been used in open back cabinets for decades.

I've used Greenback clones in an open back 1x12 and they sounded nice. Didn't the Z-28 combo come with a Greenback as the stock 1x12? People rave about those amps. It's worth a try...

The Z Wreck Jr combo comes with a Greenback and sounds great. I've experimented with a few other speakers and put the Greenback back in.

I like greenbacks both ways. I really like them in a closed back 412. But then I really like 412's. I do like them in open back combo amps too. I think they sound great either way and for all types of music. I've never had a thought that they only belonged in closed back cabs, or sounded off kilter or anything in open backs.
However I could see someone who loves the sound of a closed back 412 loaded with greenbacks being disappointed with an open back cab, regardless of the speakers. They are just different things. Maybe the poor reviews were more about the reviewers not liking open back cabs? Not necessarily the greenback in it?

I bought a Z 19x19 cab with an open back. It came loaded with a Greenback and I had every intention of swapping it out, but as soon as I ran my Ghia into it, I was blown away. LOVE IT!

Ive always hated Greenbacks....but had only had them in open back cabs. I even hated it in the Z28!
I got a Remedy now(the older one) with a 2x12 closed back cab. I was told to try Greenbacks, I hesitated, but finally bought a pair of older UK Greenbacks(6402 cones, so 1990s???). And they're great! Its "that plexi" sound.
Maybe its the amp. Maybe its the cab. Maybe its having 2 of them, I dont know. But I did hate them and now I love em.

I'm late to this party, but I had an '80s JCM 800 50 watt 2x12 combo that I wasn't ever really happy with. I tried a couple of different speakers in it but I ended up selling it to a friend. He immediately put in a pair of Greenbacks and it was absolutely KILLER. Those speakers sounded great in that open back 2x12 combo.

I much prefer them in a closed cab, and driven hard enough to have some "thump". You don't get that with an open back. I might have to eat my words. For the last couple of weeks I have been using a WGS Veteran 30 and a Scumback M75 paired together in a semi-open back cabinet and they sound pretty cool together. The M75 is a Pre-Rolla Greenback type speaker. The Vet 30 seemed to be pretty versatile on it's own but still was a little too clean on the top end for my taste on overdriven tones. Adding the Scumback helped fix that. The Vet 30 is a little more efficient than the Scumback but it doesn't seem to overwhelm it.

Another thought, I've got a 10" Greenback in my Studio Cab Ghia, and it sounds great.

I think the thing to remember, as with most speakers, is these will sound different closed back to open back. To me, the Greenback gets a little flubby in on an open cab and kills it in a closed back cab. I have a 2x12 open cab with greenbacks and I like it at lower volumes but not so much when I cranked it up
