Hey all, Recently acquired this amp in a trade and am absolutely loving it. Mine is a 1x10 combo with a red fang speaker. Love the feel, but can’t help but think I would love a 12” to work with this amp. What speaker do you guys suggest?

I'd go with something American voiced with a scoop in the mids to go with the British voiced Red Fang with a mid push. I would try a Texas Heat or a Swamp Thang from Eminence. That way if you use just the 12 it will push the 28 American and if you go just Red Fang it will push it British and using them together you get the best of both.

Thanks Marc, that is a great suggestion and not one I had really considered. Going to look into the eminence lineup and see what sounds like a fit to me.
Thanks again Dave

The sound samples on the Eminence site are really good for comparing speakers.

Dave, are you talking about getting a 12" extension cab to run alongside the 10" RF combo, or are you planning to only run the Z-28 directly into a 12" speaker?
It'd make a lot of difference in terms of recommendations.

Tell you what, though--I'd just do a good ol' Celestion G12H-30 to pair with that 10" Red Fang. As Marc suggests above, you might want to try something scooped a bit in the mids. The G12H-30 has big lows & highs (resulting in a fairly scooped sound) and sounds fantastic in its own right as a great 1x12 speaker for the Z-28. This one gets my strong vote.

Hey guys. I am looking at something I can run either way, either alone or in conjunction with the red fang. The Celestion g12h30 is something I am considering. Something with a scooped quality is definitely something that I am looking for more with this amp. I have a Celestion gold which I do not like with this amp, I much prefer the internal fang to the gold. I don’t really own any scoop type speakers, so that might be the way to go.

The H30 is good with pretty much any Z and would do a closer job than some of keeping up with the RF when you ran them that way.

The Dr Z 12 is a great speaker with the Z-28. The Celestion H30 also sounds good with the Z-28. I don't know how either of these would sound paired with the RF.

I'll also throw in my worthless 2 cents:
If you have the opportunity, try a celestion gold. I did not get along with the 10" Red Fang...lots of lower mids I did not care for. (But mine was a 10" ghia combo) I put a 10" gold in there....fantastic. I know....it's a different amp. But celestion did a great job with that 10" gold.
If you find a 12" gold you can try out...and you like it, I'd swap out your RF for the 10" gold.

WGS ET65 is another good one with a Z28.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I spent a little time with the amp and various speakers I have tonight. I tried it with my Celestion gold, the red fang and the cannabis Rex. Right off the cannabis was not the right fit, but after a lot of playing I have to say I do like the gold with the amp, I just like the fang a little bit better. I play a tele with a humbucker at the neck and I could get great tones that were not too bright with the fang that sang perfectly. For full disclosure, my other amp I play is a 65 amps Ventura, which works great with the cannabis Rex. In this setup the Ventura becomes my voxy/ delicate amp and the z becomes my fender/ Marshall amp for my more powerful stuff and lead stuff. Maybe I don’t even need a 12” to add to the amp, but I do have this cab just sitting there not being used:). Thank you all again for all your feedback, I have been amazed by this amp and like it so much more than my previous maz 18.

I spent some time with the gold and Rex this morning. It was a very nice sound, but still not loving the highs with the gold. At least in the avatar cab I have, they are very very ice picky with the tele lead pickup. This happens with either my Ventura or my z-28, and I felt this way with my maz 18nr also. I think there is something about the high end of the gold that I am not digging, especially at low to middle volume. That said, it does seem to smooth out at band volumes.

How many hours are on the gold? I recall reading that the Gold took double the amount of hours that other speakers did to break in fully.

The gold is definitely broken in, I’ve had it in various amps for over ten years. Good thought though!

I used a 2x10 loaded with RF's and a 1x12 under it loaded with CV65. After trying 3 or 4 other speakers the CV65 filled out the sounding without being distracting. Almost like it isn't there, but if you take it away you noticed right away. Kind of like adding a sub woofer to a sound bar.
As for the Z28 going directly to a 12" Speaker the CV56, the Tone Tubby 40/40, WGS Green Beret and the Reaper or Reaper HP are all good choices for a touch of the highs with out sounding too dark and dull.
The Texas Heat was really great for cleans, bit, round, but it didn't come around enough in the overdrive department, its just too efficient for the Z28 to get it working hard enough.

Hey Bubs 42. That eminence sounds like what I would want. Just a touch of depth and bass and the smallest amount of treble sparkle. I’m really intrigued by the tone tubby too. That speaker keeps on coming up, and since I dig the Rex response that might be a cool speaker too. I have a local buyer who I might trade the gold for a g12h30 and a reaper hp. I am hoping the G12h30 will get me what I am looking for with this amp.

If the G12H30 gets you almost there, then the 40/40 will do the trick, but if you want something that is going to blend with the 10" the CV65 is going to slay. Either way, if you need either I have one of each that is available. Personally I really like the Reaper HP and I don't currently have one so I would be willing to trade. I just don't like to keep doubles around, but I do keep a lot of speakers around in case I get bored. LOL

Lol I get the feeling. I might take you up on that offer if I ended up doing the trade. Pm me if you are interested in any kind of trade for a 16 ohm gold. The amp really does sound amazing. It’s snowing in the northeast, so I spent the day recording some tracks, as the wife and child couldn’t get out . Really love the red fang, just want a 12” to go along with it. Was recording with the z28, and man what a great lead tone with a Tele lead pickup.
