Great comparison. Thanks for doing that. What speakers are in each? If they are different speakers, I wonder how similar they would sound if they had the same speaker. The MAZ is a 2x10 combo with Dr Z 10 speakers and the Wreck Jr has the stock greenback. That’s a good question. I have a weber alnico blue dog 50 watt that id like to try in the wreck, but it married so well with the Stang Ray I have not tried it with the wreck yet.

That's a nice looking pedal board!! Thanks man, it's an Ikea shelf board I made and has served me well. It's funny, but with these amps, I rarely use most of the pedals. The MAZ was a great amp before the MKII upgrade, but I couln't rid myself of the pedals, but now that the upgrade is there, I can see just using a drive and delay pedal, if nothing at all. I am so glad I did the upgrade.

I currently own 2 Z amps and they happen to be the MAZ 18 MKII NR and the wreck jr so I thought I might chime in! I played the Maz for a couple years and it was my first Z amp. It really is a great amp and did a lot of things well but I was always interested in something along the lines of the original Z wreck. When I saw the jr become available I knew I had to try it. The Maz always had great tone but felt a little less responsive and didn't quite have the natural compression I had hoped for. I think it is best suited for higher gain, fast playing. I always used a Keeley compressor in front of this amp which sounded great and gave it a little better feel and sustain, along with some delay pedal. It is also nice that it had the effects loop but I found I wasn't using it as much as I thought I might.
When I got the wreck jr it was a completely different amp and different experience. The amp has a very different feel and sag, I'm guessing due to the 5Y3 instead of the 5AR4. It has perfect natural compression and I haven't had the need to use a compression pedal in front of it. It does not have the effects loop but this just makes the circuit simpler and more organic in my opinion. I have been able to nail the tones on everything from classic country to classic rock like ZZ top high gain. The controls are extremely responsive and you can dial in any style. I am also completely amazed at how well every sound out of this thing just sits perfectly in a mix. I've always found this difficult to get right with past amps but it is effortless with the jr. If you want the most natural sounding and feeling amp I would highly recommend the jr.

Jeesh...

I have never played one, but did own a maz18 rev a while ago. I like to play mostly cleanish with a band that is loud. The maz 18 was just right, but I wouldn't want any less headroom. So will the wreck jr. break up too quickly for my purpose?

You're probably right. Especially since my only other Z right now is the EZG 50.

I think the slight headroom you lose is made up for with better feel and sag. I would take a lower powered, pushed amp that is mic'd up over a high headroom amp any day.

Good Lawd!!!!! What have you done. I have been getting back into my Z Galaxie and than you posted up my two fav amps a Maz18 and a Zwreck Jr with a tele. My suspicions are confirmed. I like the extra clarity and crispness on the Zwreck Jr. Probably a more difficult amp for me to sound better due to it will definitely show my sloppiness but damn I love that crisp tone!!!!!!
It's on my list for sure. Thanks again
