At one time I would have agreed with you. Then I meet Maz. You can scurry back to Maz forum, I'm still kicking myself for not jumping on that 38, but the Ghia is raw, raw rock in roll.

The Ghia is indeed. I'm not smart enough to run all the knobs on a Mesa, but I've evolved enough to use the Maz controls to dial in a pretty convincing Ghia tone (at least on the 18nr). Not to rub it in on the 38, but brother you missed out. I really planned to swap cabs to have a studio 18, but this 38 is really special. I'm on a OD/distortion hunt now to find something that will drive this thing into some more articulate crunch. My TS-808 just gets mushy with all the head room. Maybe I just need a Ghia again.

Get a Lovepedal OD11 and thank me later. Run the volume around 10:30, the tone at 12 (to start) and the bass at 9o'clock( to start) and the gain off. Then start bringing the gain up until you have achieved what you want to hear and then start adjusting everything else to taste. Just get one of the "Naked" ones you can also run them at 18v. If you can find a Amp11 which is starting to get hard, that is also a great choice.

The Amp11 was probably the one I liked best and stuck with the longest. I ended up mostly using the boost side so I moved it on. I think you need to run a Maz 18 nr test with your Ghia to really see which you like best. I happen to know a guy who has a great one for sale.

I have a friend that has been playing a Maz18 for almost 10 years now. He has a 1x12 Combo that he bought new and it is his main gigging amp that he alternates with his 64 Princeton.

Finally I have another Greenback that sounds as good or even a touch better than my the one that came in my Red Z 1x12. For some reason some but not all of these greenbacks from the late 90's, Early 2000's that have the embossed magnet protecters sound a bit louder and not so laid back, with a touch of edge. I bought a pair of them this last week on Reverb and they arrived yesterday. The first one was a great sounding greenback, but not like the one I had. The second one was just what I was looking for, and it may just sound a touch better. Paired to gather in pair of 1x12 cabs yields a killer sound with the Ghia. I have stripped everything off between my guitar (except the Z Verb) and just cranked the Ghia up to around 1 O'clock and just use my volume knob on my Esquire. Looking forward to trying this live. I might need one pedal for a lead boost.
My one issue is I really like the sound of a combo and these little 19x19 Z Cabs are hard to find and I need another one to run my V Type with my RT66 amps.

OML, I ran my 64 SG JR straight in to the Ghia, then out into a Greenback loaded Z Cab. Tremendous I had tried to get that tone many times and many different ways but nothing sounded this good.

I really love the 1x10 studio cab combo Ghia with a 10" Greenback. It's just insanely good, one of my favorite amps ever.

I also have a 1x10 Red Fang Ghia and I don’t need to tell anyone about that, but sometimes the Greenback 10 just sounds better.

Coincidentally, a few months ago I had put a 10" Red Fang Alnico in mine and just went back to the 10" Greenback a couple of days ago. I went back and forth between the two and I think part of the Greenback's allure is it's lower efficiency. The Red Fang is 102dB/watt, and the Greenie is 98dB/watt...5dB is a huge difference, so the amp can crank a little more before it gets too loud.

Not only that, but there’s an added bonus for me too: chime. My ears are older than most here and I find that the older they get the more things change as to what I like to hear from an amp. Even with my hearing aids turned up, I’ve come to really love the sound of chime and it’s the first thing I’ve come to check for with any new speaker swap out, etc. For a long time I kinda defaulted to high efficiency alnico speakers because I thought that did the trick. Well fast forward to the 1x10 Greenback Ghia and bam, there it is! Not to mention the weight savings as a bonus.

Everything changed...and I totally agree with what you observe. I might have to give the Creamback another go. I always thought it was too "dark". Nothing wrong with the speakers, the problem's my ears. These new Widex Moment digital hearing aids are the greatest. My whole world expanded; it's like I turned on a light in a dark room.

I would love a 1x10 Greenback cab, the 12” Greenback is great, but I really love the 10” and I haven’t had one in some time.

I screwed up twice and sold my Ghia combo to get a 25th then sold the 25th because, well... I don't really know, guess I was just plain stupid. Anyway, I have a regular Ghia head now and another 25th, both rule.
Don't be stupid, never sell your Ghia.
