Hi all,
I recently received my Maz18 back from the doctors office with the Mk2 update. After playing the amp through its original 2 x 10 combo cab I was instantly blown away by the tones and overall usefulness of the amp now without pedals. However I plugged the chassis into a 1x12 cabinet that has a weber blue dog alnico 12 inch speaker in it and was further blown away. I am wondering if anyone can recommend some 10 inch speakers that will sound similar to this single 1x12 alnico weber blue dog. Thanks.

I can’t say enough good things about Hempopotimus Speakers. I have what is pretty close to a Alnico Blue with a hemp cone in my Maz 18 nr and it’s got so much character. Something tells me you could send him an email and he may be able to build something from what you tell him your looking for. His website seems to be more the stuff he is building from all new parts. I think a lot of the stuff on Reverb are vintage speakers that he rebuilds with his cones and pixie dust. 🪄🧚🪄 10” can often be found pretty cheap. If I were to have a 210 again I would mix them up and see what could be created. If your looking for that Alnico Blue sound why not start with one of those along with one of the Z’s you have? I can tell you this, the 10” Red Fang won’t get you to a blue tone. It would likely be hard to blend in a 210 because it’s so loud. reverb.com/item/36909627-hemp-speaker-10-hempopotamus-hemp-fiber-cone-fat-thick-meaty-3d-tonality-red-eye-frequency-exten

What about Weber's 10" alnico blue pup? You probably won't get closer than that.
I also have to ask...of the two cabinets you mentioned...was one open back and the other closed back? That alone will make a BIG difference.

Yeah, I'm with John. I haven't had (that I can remember?) a 10" Weber Alnico Blue Pup... but I've extensively used both the 12" and 8" versions, and I can tell you they definitely share the same "core" type of tone. If you liked the single 12, definitely go for two of the 10's.

This is probably what I should have asked, whether the Weber alnico Blue Pups will give me that same (or close) sound as the 12 alnico Blue Dog. Yes, both the 2x10 MAZ combo and the 1x12 are open back. I have read on these forums that other speakers may not be as loud as the stock Z 10’s. Is there any truth to this? One thing I love about my MAZ is its ability to compete with my bandmate’s fender vibrasonic (twin with a single 15). Can you guys tell me if there’s a chance the MAZ with the blue pups would lose some gigging volume? Really appreciate your insight on this!

Doc’s 10” speakers are pretty darned loud—they’ve got some pretty big ceramic magnets and they’re quite efficient. I’m thinking they’ll be noticeably louder than the Weber Blue Pups would be.

Weber speakers...in general...have a reputation for being less efficient. (less volume for a given amount of power. Something I like) Doc's 10s have a reputation for being rather efficient speakers. (rather loud for a the same amount of power)
But my comments about Weber's less efficiency is from years ago, that may have changed.

2 things to keep in mind while searching out 10" alnico speakers. First, they are easily twice the cost of the same alnico 12" speaker, for whatever reason is beyond me.
Second, the majority of the 10" alnico speakers only go down to 90Hz - 100Hz before they start falling off in volume, and you lose that Duane Allman low E string growl with these speakers. THIS alone put me off of 90% of the new alnico 10s on the market, the small voice coil alnicos like the early Jensens had a real flabby bottom end and I wasn't going to spend several hundred dollars to "experiment" just to find out they were sorta weak in the bottom end or just mushy.
Duane (and Dickey both) used JBLs at different times in their various speaker cabinet lineage, they both used open back cabinets with JBLs much like what you would have with a Fender Twin Reverb amp, 2x12 in a semi-open back.
JBLs go down into the 30Hz range easily, the lows are strong and clear, and they get that low E string growl bigtime. I have two JBL D110 alnico in my MAX 18 Jr right now and it is totally heaven!
I couldn't afford the collector prices for D110s on ebay, K110s are also alnico and equally expensive. What I did was buy two alnico LE10A drivers and send them to Jason at Hempopotamus to recone with the aluminum voice coil and dust cap, with the hemp cone and I asked him for a loose suspension, very light doping around the edges. Haven't gotten them back yet but I am certain he will deliver a spectacular sounding speaker. Plus I have the real deal JBL D110s in the amp now to A/B them with.
Weber makes the Michigan alnico 10, 2" voice coil, aluminum dust cap, 60w, they go down to 40Hz - 45Hz and they are affordable and if I had to buy new speakers and wanted the warmth and gritty breakup of alnico, I would invest in the Michigan 10s.
FWIW, the first Van Halen album was recorded with a Marshall 4x12 cabinet, with a pair of 25w greenbacks, and a pair of JBL D131 12" alnico drivers. Yep, that low growly bottom when he dumps the Floyd Rose all the way down? That is the JBLs you are hearing, Greenies can't go that low in frequency and the volume will just fade off on dive bombing the trem.
I will tell you this.. My MAZ 18 JR with the JBL D110s does an AMAZING SRV tone! Even with a telecaster!
So yes I am very much looking forward to the delivery of the Hemp coned JBL rebuilds.
Thought I would share my experiences looking at getting 10" alnico speakers for my MAZ jr.... YMMV!

Do you think Celestion gold 10s would be a better choice? For sure, yeah--the G10 Gold will give you "that sound" with a good bit of volume, probably noticeably louder than the Weber ones.
