I have to say Gold's and Blue's are about my favorite speakers for most applications. I always have a few of each lying around the house in boxes. When I bought my Wreck combo it had a Celestion Ruby Alnico in it. Me being me, I immediately ripped it out and put a Gold in. I was bored yesterday and I decided to give the Ruby a listen. I have to say, I am blown away. To my ears it's the perfect speaker for that amp. I'm totally shocked by that. It sounds incredible.

If I bought a combo I’d have Doc install an AlNiCo Cream in there

How was it better? What did you like? Can you describe the tonal differences?

How was it better? What did you like? Can you describe the tonal differences? I'm not good at describing tone, but I can tell you to my ears it just excelled at everything, clean and dirty. I also added a 3-way bright switch to mine. Middle position is stock, up adds a 180pf cap and down adds a 90pf cap. That mod gave me a lot of tonal flexibility. It allows me to turn the treble and cut down which gives it that nice fullness and I can add highs back in with the switch. The highs from the caps on the switch are actually more pleasing and musical than turning up the treble.

The 90 watt Cream didn't do it for me in my Wreck. Tone is very subjective as we all know, there is no one size fits all for everyone. I do like the Cream in certain amps though.

I have a Ruby in my convertible for my Therapy. I should plug the Wreck into it to see what ya mean. I did swap the blue out of my Wreck cab for a Cream and much prefer the Cream over the Blue. I have never been a fan of blues, but I like the Ruby and Therapy pairing a lot.

Gold is awesome! Great in Maz18, Wreck Jr, Nova and several other amps I've tried it in. My favorite speaker to date.
The Ruby sounded kinda dull in the comparison videos Ive heard but, with your recommendation, Id love to try one in the jr or particularly the Maz!

When I got my zwreck jr I put it on a 2x10 cab with Scumback (M/H combo) and have never switched up. I have blue, gold, and JBL cabs… just never varied from what worked immediately.

I just went back to this shootout where I had thought the Ruby sounded kinda dull, but now I see how it could work with a bright amp. So thanks man, I may just have to give one a spin!

Yup, the chime is still there. I'm so happy with that speaker in my Z-Wreck, I wouldn't even consider anything else. I do use mostly Strats and Teles, but it sounds great with humbuckers as well.

I run a Gold with my Wreck. I wish I could run the Blue/Gold combo live, but in this day and age a 212 would get me fired! I find the single Gold a little muddy in the lows and low mids. I am sure I would like a single Blue, but would probably blow it up in the first 30 minutes...
I am ready to try the Ruby. Do you think it will help?

I would never consider taking the Ruby out of my Wreck combo. It just sounds perfect to my ears, I think you would be happy, but tone is so subjective. I also have a Quantum Silver Z-Wreck head and matching 2X12 cabinet. I run a Gold and a G12H-75 Creamback together in there. Much fuller and bigger sounding than when the Gold and Blue were in there.

Thanks Tom! I totally understand-I never really know till I get it on the gig. Sounds like I need to give the Ruby a shot.
I also struggle with some top end harshness, fizziness when things get gainier. This gets addressed at the end of this video I just stumbled on (he demos the Ruby with a Wreck)-
The Gold/Creamback pairing sounds cool.

So bubs42 sold me a Ruby (thanks man) and I did a little shootout.
Z Wreck SR into- 112 Gold 112 Ruby 212 Gold/Blue
My ears liked the Gold/Blue combo the best, but the Ruby was pretty close sounding to that cab. The Gold by itself is too heavy in the lows and kinda scoopy to my ear.
That was the first time I actually compared anything to the Gold/Blue combo, which made me feel foolish. As Doc says, "the Gold/Blue pairing is the true voice of the Z Wreck".
I used the Z Wreck JR through a Blue on the gig Saturday night (very small stage, and the SR is too loud). I liked it, but it lacked low end and tended to be a little ice picky.
It was a reminder that Doc is probably right 99% of the time as to pairing amps and speakers. I will use the Greenback next time we play there!!

I have been comparing the Ruby to the Blue/Gold combo and a Tone Tubby Red. I haven't gigged with the Ruby yet, which is always the deciding factor for me.
I am starting to like the Ruby better than the Gold/Blue. To my ear the lows and highs are comparable, but the Ruby has more mids, which I feel are lacking in the Gold/Blue.
The Tone Tubby Red is nice, but a little flat to me. When I compare it with the Ruby, the Ruby sounds kinda 3D vs 2D with the TTRed.
I dunno...
