I plugged my Gibson Nighthawk into a Marvel drive set for a mild gain, then into a light delay, cranked up the z28, put on One Way Out and let her rip. Best guitar tone ever!
I was watching a video of this band, I think they were called Orange Crush, they were wailing away on a cover of Have a Cigar. Super cool, check them out on YouTube. (no affiliation). It was a hasty, half-assed attempt to cop the guy's tone.
I turned the stuff on, let it warm up a little and bam, it just sounded amazing. It was the perfect combination of parts, everything in the right measure.
I swear there are times I knob twist until I'm blue in the face. This was just plug and play awesomeness.
The Orange Crush guy was playing a Gibson SG. The Nighthawk is kind of in the same family but I must confess, I'm really gassing for an SG! Probably too late to shoot off an email to Santa. I'll probably have to wait for next year.
While we are on the subject, Merry Christmas and I hope Santa really hooks you up tomorrow morning!
Edit: the band was The Main Squeeze, not orange crush!

When I owned a Z28 I would use my McCarty hollowbody into a Tim or Timmy with mild gain as well and get that Carlton/Ford sweet overdrive. It caused me to enjoy playing just a little bit more. My Maz 8 in triode mode can help me achieve it, but not like the 28. It is still my favorite Z offering.

Off topic but you need to get a video of Good Company on the Facebook page!
I've owned a few Z's now. I tend to constantly change gear but the Z28 is a keeper. I don't use it for everything. I play in some cover gigs where the clean tone is often, as or more, important than dirt. I use a Brunetti head in those instances but I'm itching to build a band around the z28 tone. Its just me. I don't care if my audience is an empty beer bottle. The next band has to be about music I love and not over played covers drunk people dance to.

Hmmm, I have video's of the band along with other bands I've seen. Maybe they don't show up for some reason. I will check it out! The 28 is the Z I had the longest, but as of a year ago I'm just not gigging in large venues to use it - even with the Brake Lite. The Cure and Maz 8 cover everything for the season I am in.

Agree. I plugged straight in with my tele yesterday, at gig volume, and it sounded great. I dont usually prefer that guitar straight in but love it with pedals, but yesterday it sounded awesome. Settings were 2-10-3, BL on 2 clicks.

My mistake, I just watched Little Duece Coup. Nice unique version!

Thanks. I've been in this band since '89 and we just play to have fun. Every once in a while a serious gig comes our way (meaning $$ instead of food), but we may have to practice, but otherwise we just call out a tune and go with it.

I have always thought of the z28 as a little fire burner of an amp and always approached it that way but honestly it cleans up nicely too. I set the bass at 9 oclock and the treble at 11 oclock and the volume at 10 oclock and dialed the guitar volume back a tad and it had a really nice clean tone. Not at all Fendery scooped but a fat clean that sang with authority. Still at a decent stage volume too. Or at least I assume. Everything changes when you're on a noisy stage.

For me Volume at 9 oclock, bass 7/8 o'clock, treble at 2 o'clock. If I want more I just boost it, with a Vanilla Zendrive. I have it set so if I turn it on or off, It just sounds like the amp is going up or down with slightly more gain and slightly more volume.
