Hey fellas,
My ears are ringing. I haven't done this before today because with my abused ears I have to be careful...but I decided to really crank the CAZ-45 today, and now the neighbors like it as much as I do! I have to say that the Level control is great but this amp really comes alive when you get the power section cooking. Like all of Dr. Z's amps it is a stage amplifier. I wish I could record some clips that would faithfully represent how good it is but I can't. You've just got to plug into one for yourself! I'll just stir the pot a little by saying how incredible this thing sounds when it's at big stage performance volume, it's so much fun. It is truly a great amplifier and the louder the better. It's almost counterintuitive but it cleans up better with the guitar volume at stage settings too.
That inspired me to put my Z Air Brake on it and it works beautifully with the CAZ. Some amps like the attenuator more than others do, and the CAZ seems to get along really well with it. And that's great news.
Doc, any idea when we will be able to hear some professionally produced demos of this amp?

I figure it's really loud. I have an Air Brake that I'll try once the CAZ gets here.

It's almost counterintuitive but it cleans up better with the guitar volume at stage settings too. What he said!!! It can absolutely scream, or be quite clean just with how hard you pick and how you set the amp in general. Tons of articulation either way. And lowering the volume on the guitar, I've never heard an amp that can go from that raging to that clean just with the volume knob and picking a little differently. Regarding the volume, I think it's just more apparent when the overall volume is louder. The level (master volume) control itself is extremely linear regarding tone and feel. I'm glad you brought it up though, because in say a recording or video where there is a very limited dynamic range to play with, it's hard to convey that. But in a live situation where there's way more dynamic range overall, it's really apparent. Ears ringing - I've been using a supplement called NAC for about 20 years before or after (or both) being in a loud environment and swear it helps. I read some stuff a long time ago (that I can't find now) about how the military was testing it on the troups being exposed to loud volume and the gist was that when they used it, both the permanent and temporary hearing loss was greatly saved by using it. If I know I'm going to be in a loud situation, I take a couple before hand, or maybe just one depending on what that situation might be. If I still feel that head compressed feeling after, I'll take another. If I just randomly blast an amp, I'll take a couple after and I think it really helps. Maybe others might be affected differently, but for me, it helps for sure. Lastly, exposure time is important. Your body can deal with it for a little while, but you need to take breaks. I find the older I get, the less I can really tolerate it, so I'm more prone to remove myself from a loud situation a little quicker than when I was younger. Better to take a 15 minute break and then hit it again rather than go non stop. And really lastly, in ear monitors can attenuate about 30db which is quite a bit better than regular ear plugs or even gun range shooting over the ear things I use now and then. It's worth a try, and isn't very expensive.

Doc, is it reasonable to assume Humbucker and Sweetwater will have amps from the first production run?

Yes Jake will have early production units, many on their way there now. Jake pre-ordered a dozen or so CAZ-45 heads as well as multiple sets. Z
