I am expecting my Jaz later this week, GC purchase en route. I played two of them previously and thought it was perfect for a Strat. I plan on changing out the 12ax7 TO A 12at as I am looking for smoothness and headroom. Does anyone have any input on this, good brands or previous experience??

Congrats on the Jazz acquisition and welcome to the forum. I have a pair of Luxs which is a very similar circuit to the Jazz and have not tried an AT7 but think it would be worth a try if you are looking to maximize clean headroom. The result may be a thinner tone but might suit you.

Try a 5751 or a 12AY7 instead. I think you will like that much better than a 12AT7. Even so, I'll bet that eventually you will return to the original preamp tube.

I'm not sure an AT7 is a good choice for the first gain stage. I currently have a 5751 in V1 of my Therapy and an AY7 in my EZG. I keep telling myself that I'll try a 5751 in the EZG but it sounds so darn good with the AY7 that it may be a while before I do the swap. Pretty pathetic as only takes a minute to do it.

And again I'll say that I eventually came to realize that when Mike designs his amps he probably goes through every type of tube before he decides on the one that works best. You might be able to come up with a particular tube that works better but it will be marginal and probably not commonly available at a reasonable price. Not something a builder can use in production and maintain consistency.
I find much more effect swapping speakers than messing with tubes. Yeah, I know that can be expensive.
