So here's the recommended tube set for the EMS amp:
V1-V3: 12AX7, V4-5: EHX EL34 (matched pair), V6: EHX 5U4GB
Recommended Bias Point: 36mA (while in Solid State Rectifier Mode)
The set from the Tube Store breaks out like this:
V1: JJ ECC83S
V2: Tung Sol 12AX7
V3: Sovtek 12AX7LPS
V4-V5: Electro Harmonix EL34 (matched pair)
V6: Electro Harmonix 5U4GB
I usually buy from Watford but bought the recommended replacement set from Tube Store.
I don't really have a problem with the recommended 12AX-class tubes or the rectifier, but the EHX EL34 don't normally rank very high compared the Gold Lion, Mullard, Tung Sol, etc.
Has anyone tried something else in place of the EHX EL34s, and if so what did you think?

Sorry for no answers to your question, I wish I had experience with the EMS to be of help. I run the EHX 34’s in one of my amps with success, and have a Groove Tubes offering of the same tube the EL34-R in my SRZ 65. The response is totally different in two different circuits as you might guess. But overall I would say the choice of that tube in the EMS was based on the midrange bite, crunch, affordability, and consistency. I think the EHX EL34 was one of the first efforts out of Russia to make a tube that reflected the Mullard design. I am a consumer though, not a tube guru😁. Usually ( probably always )the Doc has a reason for what he does with tube selection based on the offerings at the time.

Thought that I was in need for new power tubes, which surprised me. A simple pull and reinstall of the all of the tubes made the issues go away. Since I had the chassis out I figured that I'd try some different preamp tubes out. V1(JJ ECC83S), to my ears, made the biggest difference in tone and feel of the amp and it was significant. Tried out a few different 12AX7's(Tung-Sol, High Gain Ruby Tube, NOS Jan Phillips 12AX7WA, NOS Jan Phillips 5751, older JJ's). They all pushed the amp into an unpleasant almost brittle tone with the exception of the 5751, which was very close to the JJ's. Just to see if the tone/feel followed the brand or the particular tube I tried a couple of older JJ ECC 83S in V1 and the tone/feel followed the brand not just the particular tube. What I learned from this little experiment was to trust Doc's ears and suggestions for tubes because he was spot on.
