Hi Maz forum -
My MAZ 18NR seems to break up really early, with the volume at 9 o'clock. Tele bridge only. Treble noon, Middle 9, Bass 2, Cut at 9. I don't remember it breaking up that early.
I had the MarkII Master Volume mod done this time last year. Tubes are the updated 6141n (hope that is correct name).
All other other tubes are original, from 2010. Maybe the issue is the old tubes? Thanks for any input here-- I miss the magic of my Maz!

So, I'm answering my own question by reading a post I did a while back! It looks like V1 gets the most work so should start there... But now exact to the spec on the Dr Z page does the tube need to be? Is 12AX7ACZ HG a sufficient replacement to the "V1: JJ ECC83S" listed on the Z-Amps info page?
Thanks for sharing your wisdom! A chance to learn!

Any good 12AX7 will work to see if that position is the problem. I actually would start with the phase inverter first (the one nearest the power tubes) and then go to V1. If you see no change with the known good tube, put the old one back in. The only problem with using the HG is that it is a high gain tube (or at least so says the manufacturer) so it may cause it to break up quicker.

As long as its a 12ax7, it will work and provide similar function as long as its good and within specification. Now from there its a matter of taste and tone as to which 12ax7 to use.
