Last year the band was invited to support a food festival benefitting a friend's charity named for his daughter lost to pediatric cancer. Fast forward to 2020, and they decided to do it virtual and asked for a music video. I decided on a rockin' version (via Doyle Bramhall) of I Can See Clearly for a positive vibe. I had a plan. Record the scratch tracks, ask each guy to simply place their phone in the their pocket, play the scratch tracks through their headphones, and borrow their spouse's phone to record their audio/video (unless you have recording equipment). I wanted a live feel. Also, I asked that they count off at the start verbally so I could sync the audio & video. Simple. Well, I was oh-for-three on anyone following my instructions. I knew the drummer would record the audio in his studio, but he decided to lip sync his video. He then suggested that the keyboard player stop over and they would socially distance a recording in his basement. My brother on sax did the count-off with his fingers rather than audio (after forgetting for days that he was going to do the video). Add on to all of that with me discovering there is a new video codec on phones where I had to download it to my pc to see even my video and then convert to the older format for my video editing software where each 2.5 minute clip took an hour. I definitely have new found respect for other socially distanced videos and especially the church bands that were producing socially distanced services. All in all it came together for us. I was pretty happy with the final especially getting my brother on sax. And, I got a quick education on how YouTube deals with cover songs and copyrights. My guitar sound is my Maz Jr.
