Hello everyone, this will be my first post. Ive never owned a Dr.z amp before but I’ve been on a tone hunt for a long time, and I wanted others opinions on whether I’ll be making the right purchase. I’m about to order a z wreck jr.
The tone in question is non other that Brad Paisley himself, here is the clip in question.
I understand that Brad uses multiple amps, with different gain levels for song requirements (solo, verses, etc). My plan is to have a pretty medium to high gain sound that can be cleaned up to clean/edge of break up clean. Maybe use a boost or some type of pedal for solos if even required at all.
Any tips or ideas on how to get a similar tone would be appreciated.... oh and yes I realize I don’t have Brads fingers, but a guy can try!
Thanks Benny

I should mention I live in Ontario Canada, meaning that I am unable to “test drive” one of these amps, so my decision to buy is solely based off internet reviews, research (this forum), and YouTube clips.

Welcome to the Forum Benny! A lot of good information and great people here! There are several regulars here that are in Canada - I'm sure they'll chime in. I don't have the Wreck Jr. but I do have the full sized Wreck - great amp. I'm sure someone will give you their favorite settings to accomplish what you seek.

Welcome! This amp will certainly allow you to use your guitar's volume to clean up while in high gain. I'm currently using it in a rock band where I'm doing the same thing.

You will love the Z-Werck Jr but getting that tone will be hit or miss and depend on your style and level of playing. It definitely does sound amazing but I think a lot has to do with his particular style and his playing. I have had a few guitarists play thought my amps and thought WOW!! this amp actually sounds way better than I thought but it doesn't sound like that when I play through it…lol
I will always remember this article I read when I was in my teens about Eddie and Ted back in 78-79 during a sound check.
Eddie:
"Ted was cool enough to give the band a sound check,". "He's standing off to the side and he's listening to me, and he comes up and says, 'Hey, you little ****! Where's your little magic black box?' I'm going, Who the f___ is that? And it was Ted. Hey Ted, it's nice to meet you, thanks for the sound check. And he's going, 'Let me play your guitar!' I go, 'Okay, here you go.' He starts playing my guitar and it sounds like Ted.
"He yells, 'You just removed your little black box, didn't you? Where is it? What did you do?' I go, 'I didn't do anything!' So I play, and it sounds like me. He says, 'Here, play my guitar!' I play his big old guitar and it sounds just like me. He's going, 'You little ****!'
So I always remember, sometimes it's not all the amp producing the tone, it's the player, style and amp all combined getting that sound.

Boy, you have a lot of options - Brad's worked with the Doc on a LOT of amps over the years. A Z-Wreck Jr's a good place to start, though...
Welcome to the forum!

Sadly I’m about 8 hours away from lauzon music. That being said I’m likely to place my order for one there. Thanks Cool. Lauzon is a great shop. I bought my last 3 Zs through them (I live in Newfoundland). Unfortunately for you, I am likely one of the best Paisley resources on the forum mackaygtrs is right, you will not sound like Paisley no matter what amp you get! However, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy the gear you want to try along the way. Any Z you buy will still sound glorious along the way, even when you are not sounding like BP. I don't have a Z Wreck Jr (yet, there is one on order now) but I have many other Paisley-type Z amps. I'm sure the Wreck Jr will work as well as a full-sized Wreck. However, both are still going to be loud amps if you want to get them in the zone on their own (i.e., you will likley need an attenuator if you are playing at home). The Jr may be a better choice if you are a home player only but the choice of speaker will make a difference as well. I'm sure the Wreck Jr with its master volume will be easier to tame from going from clean to mean with just the guitar. However, BP also uses an overdrive pedal many times to get some of his more recent sounds. So, even if you buy the amp, a pedal like the Wampler Paisley Drive Deluxe (with both the normal Paisely Drive & Underdog pedals in one) can go a long way to help with the drive when you can't get there using the amp alone. Jim Lill on YouTube used to have a great little video on how to get BP's tones using amp/pedal combinations. However, it seems he has taken it down. I don't think you can go wrong with the Jr. The main question is whether you want the combo vs head/cab. Personnaly, I like the head/cab angle so I can mix and match different speakers easily. However, if all you plan on having is one amp then the combo will be a neat package. Oh, and and here's my basement wall. I don't sound like BP either (even with my Crook)...and that's ok

I have a couple Wampler pedals sitting around as it is, I might have to pick up a deluxe drive once I get my hands on the amp itself. (Sadly I’ll be waiting 8-10 weeks, but I’m sure you already know that as youre also in Canada) I’m pretty much trying to rejuvenate my live rig, and this time I wanna keep it as simple as possible, 1 or 2 drive/boost pedals, delay, reverb, and maybe a compressor if I’m feeling it. I’m coming off using a kemper stage live, which still makes my head hurt to this day! Haha I very much appreciate your response, and I’ll have you know I’m completely jealous of your basement!

Lol, based on what I take to be your level of experience you don’t need me as a basement hack giving you advice! With the Jr, the stock Greenback may be a bit quiet, but an AlNiCo could raise the volume a fair bit, if needed. Plus, a Gold or similar may take to Jr closer to the actual Wreck than the reedy Greenback. I don’t think the Jr will be deficient of volume, though. Most Zs punch well above their rated output, regardless of the speaker. Yeah, the room is pretty neat. That’s about 15 years of buying gear and hardly selling anything...especially any Z.

I have the 804's with the matching cherry Nautilus HTM1 center. They are amazing speakers. Apparently we like Red amps and nice speakers.

Not a chance, I appreciate any advice I can get! That’s really interesting about the speakers, I wasn’t aware they could have that much of an effect on volume. I’ve never swapped speakers yet, in fact I’ve only used a Mesa boogie Mark 5 with the same speakers before I bought the kemper haha. I was thinking I’d probably use the Jr in the bars and still make use of the kemper if the venue is of bigger size or if I feel necessary. I mean I use the official z wreck profiles anyway

I’ve never been on the Canadian guitar forum either so I’ll check that out too. I don’t know if I can wait 2-3 months! Haha I too would mic my amp every gig back before I bought a kemper, makes everything easier. Chances are I will when I get a Jr. too. Mind I ask what speaker you’re using? I was pretty convinced I’d buy the combo version but now I’m second guessing it.

i have the combo with the stock speaker greenback at first when i got it i was a bit underwhelm with the sound it sounded boxy but playing constantly the speaker has broken in when has made huge difference. i would have liked the head and cab but all they had was a combo and the last one at the time in Canada at long and mcquade so i thought about it a lot and came to the conclusion were do i play bars, casinos wedding week-end gigs none really big crowds and when they are big gigs they mic every one.the combo is pretty light in weight and has lots of bass coming out of it.i still would have liked the combo with a 2x12 i bet the 2x12 with the gold and blue in it would just sound awesome.now you got me thinking again. i have a wampler paisley deluxe pedal great sound but for me i use the z drive pedal so i will be putting that on c.c. guitar forum for sale i dont think you can go wrong with either combo or head

As you can tell from the carpet, this room was my movie/audio room. I have a full system including Bryston amps, Pass Labs pre, etc that I used for movies and music for years. In recent years, 1/2 of the system is in boxes while I still run a 2-channel system in the room which is now a guitar room more than anything. I love the B&Ws. I’m running a Paradigm Reference sub as well and it works great (I’m actually running my Kemper through the sub as well to give the Kemper some nice low end thump).

Awesome, yeah I was into the whole Home Theater/Media thing at one time too but now just down to 2-channel and the occasional 3-channel with the HTM1. I'd been chasing home media since the early 90's and found out after doing it for 15 or so years that it was a money pit with no return, too much technology and chance to keep everything up to date. Guitars, nice boutique amps tend to keep their value or even go up. I will say though, the 804's are keeping their value. I think I could sell them still for more that I paid for them 15+ years ago..lol. Nice media amps tend to keep their value also, It was all the processors like Dolby, Dolby Digital, Digital Plus, Pro logic I/II, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, DTS etc... I just finally gave up. lol

Nice media amps tend to keep their value also, It was all the processors like Dolby, Dolby Digital, Digital Plus, Pro logic I/II, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, DTS etc... I just finally gave up. lol Ha ha! You are spot on! Except for my 2-channel preamp bought about 8 years ago, I haven't bought anything home audio new in 12-15 years. I remeber buying my Bryston SP1.7 surround preamp (about $5k-$6k) about 15 years ago with the promise of 'upgrade proof'! That didn't hold up well. Once bitten by that I never really bought anything 'expensive' digital anymore. I'm with you on the 804s holding their own. I had been tempted in the past to upgrade them but decided, in the end, that they are just too good to let go while spending north of $10k to get something similar to replace them.

i have the combo with the stock speaker greenback at first when i got it i was a bit underwhelm with the sound it sounded boxy but playing constantly the speaker has broken in when has made huge difference. i would have liked the head and cab but all they had was a combo and the last one at the time in Canada at long and mcquade so i thought about it a lot and came to the conclusion were do i play bars, casinos wedding week-end gigs none really big crowds and when they are big gigs they mic every one.the combo is pretty light in weight and has lots of bass coming out of it.i still would have liked the combo with a 2x12 i bet the 2x12 with the gold and blue in it would just sound awesome.now you got me thinking again. i have a wampler paisley deluxe pedal great sound but for me i use the z drive pedal so i will be putting that on c.c. guitar forum for sale i dont think you can go wrong with either combo or head Ahh, I bit the bullet and just ordered the combo, maybe down the road I’ll regret not getting the head version but I convinced myself earlier this year that my next amp will be a combo no matter what. I’m glad you mentioned the speaker may take some time to get worked in, I’ll keep that in mind when I get my hands on the thing. Also you’re not the first one I’ve seen mention how they like the z drive, I’ll have to give that a try too, it’ll probably be right up my alley! Thanks again

Benny go on you tube and watch dr z drive pedal by Eric amble he does a great job explaining how to use the pedal. I am really happy with mine all I use now is a little bit of reverb it makes the amp come alive. you know the combo is a good set up its light easy to carry and its loud especially with the z drive pedal you wont be disappointed
