How are you M12 users setting controls? I would expect that running the Bass and Treble controls below noon would give you more mids, right? Is that a pretty common setting? With the tone controls at 10:00 to 11:00 how high should you be able to run the Volume control and the amp still remain fairly clean with single coil pickups?

That’s a true hunch I think. Lower bass/treb gives the perception of more mids. Can also push the volume a touch more because of it.
My settings depend on my setting. Haha. As in my context. Treble is usually around noon. May eve a tad less or more based on the room. Bass I push higher when jamming by myself at home. Maybe 1-2 o clock. Live I back it off to about 11 o clock because I hit it with pedals I’m a dense band mix.
Stays mostly clean to about 1 o clock on volume dial with a 5v4. Tele with Fralin blues specials.

Bass to the right of noon, treble to the left of noon--that's how I'd always ended up on my M12. (Opposite of how I would set the T & B knobs on my Z28, actually.) This was with a Scumback M75-PVC speaker, which is like an early pre-Rola Greenback. IIRC, I could get the Volume knob above noon easily without breakup; it would start crunching around 2:00 or so.

Fiddled on the M12 today for a few to confirm my recollections. I have a 5v4 in mine but it’s stays squeaky clean til noon with tone controls not adding gain (shy of noon) and is a bit of a hairy clean at 1 o clock. 2 o’clock is pretty pushed but can be coaxed to come across clean with a light touch. After Noon on the volume dial is pretty loud.
