Dear sir I have a lovely stash of 6n14n tubes. Several varieties including the EB and EV types and the halo getter types you talked about. Have you tried these is a Monza ? What might I expect? Or a 5751 in v1 to tame the pre amp section some?? Or bad idea? Also would you recommend I load my new wreck Jr tomorrow with GE JAN 12ax7’s (70’s I think??) I have about a dozen of them. Or would I not notice much in these particular amps? Thanks 🙏 You’re a legend sir

While you are waiting for a reply from the Doc might I suggest you try the combinations of different tubes and let's your ears decide if you like them or not? (This post does smell a little bit like an add for tubes you have available but I will take you at face value. 😁) I think the 6n tubes in a Monza might be a bit dark for that amp. I'm pretty sure I've read about others trying a 5751 in V1 with varied results. Depends on what your goals are. Try them and see if you like them. I've spent time and money on different tubes in the past and most often end up liking what the doc shipped the amp with the best. Keep us posted on your progress. Welcome to the forum! God bless, Todd

"(This post does smell a little bit like an add for tubes you have available but I will take you at face value. 😁)" Yikes pretty cynical...is it that bad around here? I hope not. It hasn't seemed that way yet but Im new here and I haven't been really on a forum in a decade or so in any real capacity I imagine its different now. Sorry to burst any bubbles but Im not here to hock anyone anything. As well, the Doc already did quite thoroughly reply to me. SO, I got my answer from the circuit designer on his opinion. It was thoughtful and thorough and thats more than I even dreamed of. He's such a nice guy. Have faith....I'm not selling diddly There are other venues for that sort of thing if that was my goal. This place is for community < for me > not commerce. I think your right about sticking with things doc chose but still knowing to trust in your ears. In the end thats all that matters with anything tone related. Like salt and pepper to taste or maybe neither right? I didn't like what a 5751 did in another very aggressive amp I had previously .It took away the "it" the drive had. It did have a big effect though thats for sure it just wasn't what I wanted for that amp then. I tried it in another Fender'y type amp (blackface ish') and it was killer... it doesn't hurt to ask the folks here like yourself who may have tried it and how it may have went for them. Im chasing inspiring tone not trolling for dollars. Thanks for your thoughts Im gonna try the 6n's in the Monza but I think I am not messing with the 5751 idea... who knows? Peace KC

I use 6n14n tubes in all of my el84 amps. I can’t tell much difference in sound other than a fuller bottom end which I appreciate. I mostly do it for reliability reasons as they are better built that current production tubes. Longer life and have yet to experience tube rattle.

Sorry for not doing that. keep us posted on your end results, the Monza is one of my favorites!! Todd

Sorry for not doing that. keep us posted on your end results, the Monza is one of my favorites!! Todd Todd, Oh, it's all good. It's in a weird way why Ive started to try to "come out of my shell", as it were, and get involved in a place like this. It has no slime vibe that I can feel yet (and thats nice). I just cant take the hate juice flooding the web man... its rough. I just like music. I quit ALL social media 2 or 3 years ago. YUCK. I evolved (lol) to only watching YouTube videos on guitar and motorcycles and stuff. No religion or politics or drama. It's only been an improvement. Facebook especially, for me, became like an emotional vampire I have enough crap local to my own life, like everyone does, and I don't need to drink from a Facebook firehouse of DOO. If I somehow came across like I was selling something I do apologize. I don't translate to the keyboard world so well (please everyone in the future assume that if you will, or that I fat thumbed some auto correct thing or whatever) most of the time. Im trying to rectify that. I was just curious about the specifics of what I have in my parts supply stash for the future mainly. I was a little taken back that I was perceived that way. Im sorry if I came off wrong. Im glad Doc was nice enough to answer me anyway if thats how I sounded. Another testament to his level of Zen / Cool. I tried to record something for the first time EVER last night...15 ft mic cable...needed to be a 20 ft cable to reach my PC... man its killing me. So, thats one order now. I did get My Z wreck Jr. Padded slip cover today from Humbucker Music. boy are those things nice or what? I'ts my second one so its not a surprise but still ... nice covers. Keep it up! I have an NOS Rectifier I didn't even bring up lol.. (GE >>RCA ?? cant recall off hand) Thoughts? Peace and stay safe all K

its not a sonics thing there from what I understand (which is limited but hopefully growing) I just wonder from a reliability standpoint? If a rectifier fails does the amp suffer damage?

Hey KC - Todd is one of the nicest guys here - don't let his post scare you away. He is extremely knowledgable (especially when it comes to cables and such) and is always willing to share what he knows.

I think that the general consensus that you will get expressed here over the long haul is that most who delve into NOS land end up swapping out and going back to the new production tubes that the amp was designed around (mainly power tubes). Some NOS preamp tubes may find their way staying in amps as well as rectifiers. Some people will swear by all NOS, though and keep them in over the long haul. I think the most popular NOS tube swap you will see around here is the rectifier and, as you said, that’s mainly for reliability. If a rectifier goes usually the only other component it takes out is a fuse, as designed. However, one can’t rule out some other minor component.

Cool I wondered if a fail would cause damage... now I feel better:) My first priority is keeping these amps safe. They are too good to not be passed on (to my son...daugther isn't interested at all lol). I hate the idea of things being so "cheap" and "disposable" in todays culture. I think something worth owning, is worth keeping and worth caring for but being used day in and day out that demands a certain design and build criteria thats not found in every box and on every shelf (except out of Huber Heights, OH!). Unless, of course it no longer inspires you. Thats a different thing I think? then pass it on to another. But I don't want to contribute to growing landfills. I want to buy once, (for each model...lol) buy well and be happy. I think Ive done that with more success the older I get. Not so much in years past. I was like a Bass and a shiny lure... "I'll Bite". I gave that up (I hope). When I croak my kids will have to deal with my Z's ...LOL. When they do they will still work like new. KC

RK, If I am following correctly you are asking about the NOS Rectifiers that you have in your possession. It has been my experience as well as personal advice from Z to use NOS Rectifiers in the Maz Series amps. That advice has paid off in a subtle way for me. You had a question about using the NOS Rectifiers and wondering if it is risky if it fails. The current consensus is that recent production rectifiers do not have the durability and tolerance of some of the classics such as the GE or Sylvania. I went into a bad rabbit hole with current JJ Rectifiers and my Z-Plus. Ultimately I resolved my problem by installing an NOS GE. When a rectifier shorts out it can cause a couple of issues. The first is that it can take out the power tubes, the second is that it can fry a Grid resistor, which is its job to be a martyr. It's also possible that it doesn't take anything else out. So, in summary, NOS rectifiers are the way to go if the source is reliable.

ya sorry if I was confusing...the NOS one is the one Im staring at and I was thinking of trying it for exactly the things you state. Its good know about taking out the power tubes. That would be very upsetting. I think I will shove that in tomorrow afternoon. I only have one... Thanks!
