Ok, after having my Cure for 4-5 days (and loving every minute ), question....seems like the Level control on the amp acts pretty much as an attenuator would. So, what's the difference, if any? Or am I completely off base here?

I've owned two of Doc's Brakelites and although they do a fine job, I prefer the Level control. The Level is continuously variable while the BL's have click points. But most important, I don't perceive any real tonal difference when I adjust the Level. It's brilliant!

Thanks, Mike, although that link you posted made my head hurt after reading it.....
And, with all due respect, LT's response worked best for my feeble brain....

I've owned several attenuators and tried some of them with various amps. For me, the only attenuator/amp combination I liked was the THD Hotplate/Fender Twin Reverb. In all other cases I preferred the use of master volume. However, I set my amps up so they are running clean, just to get them working and full sounding. If I were trying to get the amp to distort at lower volumes, I might prefer an attenuator.

I've got a THD Hotplate and it works better with some amps than others. It's fine to attenuate my Budda Twinmaster a small amount- 4 to 8db- beyond that, it turns to fizzy mush. The amp has no master and it's still too loud at -8db for me to use it as a dirty rock amp. Oh, but what a glorious sound!
The Hot Plate works very well with my Nova- even -12db sounds good. The Nova has an artifact that I don't always care for when the master volume is set too low (about 9:00). The Hot Plate allows it to be set higher (about 12:00).
Though it's a completely different technology, the level control on my Dr. Z Cure sounds a little better than the Hot Plate.
