I replaced the tubes in my Z28 in early February with the Dr Z recommended set purchased from the Tube Store, all primarily JJ and Sovtek. I have played 3-4 hours at least five days per week since. Yesterday, I had put the amp on standby for a few minutes, and when I came back and turned everything back on, I strummed a chord and lost all power-a fast fade out, if you will. I checked the fuse, and it appeared to have blown.
My question is, is this likely a power or preamp tube failure? I did not look at the tubes to see if anything looked “hinky”, I took the cowards way out and dropped it off with a tech. Seems like six months on a set of tubes isn’t long, although there were quite a few hours on them??

Tubes are by far the greatest variable under the hood of any tube amp. Brand new tubes can fail the very afternoon you put them in. Did you replace the rectifier as well?

You can’t rule out a rectifier tube going South. If it turns out to be the rectifier, it’s the one tube that most would recommend using NOS for expected longevity, if nothing else.
However, no matter what tube it is, current production tubes failing sooner than expected is, unfortunately, the new reality.

My $$ are on the rectifier. Keith is right, current tubes failing is the new reality!

My $$ are on the rectifier. Ditto! If it’s blowing the fuse, I’m betting on the rectifier also.

I JUST had this happen to my other amp, a Vslvetrain Ssratoga. Was playing at gig vol, then just a slow fade to no sound. No smoke, no smell, no redplating, no blown fuse, tried another guitar and cord(not it). Turned it back on, same thing happened minutes later.
I ordered all new tubes. Installed them, played hard for an hour, no issues. So, bad tube, but which one??? I started with putting the old 2 preamp tubes and old 2 power tubes back in, but with the new rectifier. No issues! So, chalked it up to a failed 5Y3 rectifier tube.
