Zpilot, are you looking more to get the whole Steve Miller sound going on or are you just looking to get more drive and volume out of your M12?

Does the mod give more volume? I thought it decreased the power but increased drive? I haven't done it to mine, but would like to give it a try.

I'm not positive but since the 5AR4 recto increased the power but the EL844s decreased the power I figured the bottom line was the overall volume would stay about the same, just change the sound. It's in that thread somewhere I'm sure.

Here's a comparison from Mini-ZFest in 2015

Zpilot, are you looking more to get the whole Steve Miller sound going on or are you just looking to get more drive and volume out of your M12? I don't have an M12. The other guitarist in my band does and says that it is too sterile sounding when played without pedals. I am thinking he really just needs something with a more conventional 12AX7 type front end or maybe something like a Catalinbread Formula 5F6 pedal in front of the M12.

Does the mod give more volume? I thought it decreased the power but increased drive? I haven't done it to mine, but would like to give it a try. Per Doc's old thread, the mod is creating more drive, ala a pushed Stangray sound, just less volume/watts. It's much more of a feel thing. It's no longer a sweet little 12 watts. Boosts volume, power, drive. The 5AR4 is the major player in the mojo. Way more plate voltage. It does tighten up the lows too, which you might not necessarily like. But it does let you run the bass pot up more, in comparison. You could also just use regular EL84's as well, or maybe 6n14n's, and be more in the 18-20 watt camp. Still not quite a Stangray in terms of the tone stack, but a good compromise I imagine for what Steve Miller was looking for. To my ear, the M12 even with the mods still has a more "restricted/contained(?)" sonic signature. Less lows and less highs than maybe a true half power stangray. That's not a knock. Just trying to say the EQ's are not the same. M12 has more mids still, along with less highs and lows. If you really just NEED an small Stangray sound, the Steve Miller Mod with an EQ pedal gets closer. I like to scoop 500 and 800hz, boost lows and highs. I greatly enjoy my M12 and RXJR (which may actually be a tad closer to a 1/2 power Ray sonic signature). Together they got loads of chime and punch. I run a 5V4 in my M12. Give a little more drive and volume, but not as tight as a 5AR4.
