Hi,
My Z-Lux JJ 6v6 tubes are tired and rattling, kind of farty these days, not tight. I've got several amps with JJ 6v6 tubes, getting a bit tired of that sound.
Is there another 6v6 which is well-suited to this amp? I don't really want to go to the 5881 tubes.
Thanks,
Swampcooler

When I first got my Z-Lux I was plagued by rattling JJ6V6 tubes. I bought a couple of quads and I guess they just had a bad run (Around 2016 I think). So I tried 5881s and I liked them for a while but I decided to get some more JJ's a year and a half or so later. This time I hit pay dirt and the amp came totally alive. I've had those tubes in there for two or three years now and they still sound great. Just a thought...a good quad of JJ's sound GREAT in the Z-Lux. A lot of 6V6 tubes can't handle high plate voltage and it's important to have well matched tubes in the Lux. Recently I've been having great luck with JJ6V6's...a lot of my amps use them.

I put new JJs in mine this year. Now, if I just had a gig...

I’d be reluctant to suggest NOS for this application. Even though they are generally better built with superior components, they were designed for wall voltages of a different period.

Thanks for the replies.
Yeah, gigs, I can't quite remember what those are these days . . .
I'm considering a quad of EH 6v6s matched by Apex. I remember when these came out Doc gave them lots of attention in his builds. Supposed to handle very high voltages, higher than what's present in the Lux. They do have a more traditional 6v6 tone than the JJs.
Maybe this will create a "super" deluxe Z-Lux. That could be very cool indeed.

Unfortunately those are not the same as the original Sovtek 6V6's. The good ones were the Groove Tube re-labeled 6V6 R. The 6V6 R sounded amazing and I used them in my original Z 28's, I wish EH still made them but they don't. Sorry to report but the JJ 6V6 is the only currant production 6V6 that will hold up to the plate voltage in the Z Lux.

Doc, can you shed any light on the current production of tubes in regard to the Wuhan COVID virus? I'm curious if we're going to lose some tube factories in the wake of this thing.

Not sure if that is happing though it seems posable. I did hear that there was a fire at the Chinese factory that builds there fine 12AX7 B tubes. I bought 200 once I heard, they are used on the new CAZ-45.

When my original tubes started rattling, I replaced them with Tung-Sol 5881s and to my ears, it made a big difference in the tone. More headroom and fuller sound, just what I was looking for!
