We had a Gathering last weekend : It was Outside and Hot : So Hot after 30 minutes of playing we were Soaking Wet : We had the AMPS in The shade : My Guitar was so Hot I burned my finger tuning the high E > WALKED INSIDE AIR CONDITIONED ROOM : Kaboom My Guitar Instantly started popping : It sounded like walking on thin ice cracking : Not only did it weather check the Body It weather cheeked the Neck . Not just a spot here and there : The Whole thing both sides : Has anyone ever had this happen before ? In two spots I could actually chip the paint off with My Finger nail. It's Not Funny But it is : I thought Fenders New Nitro Finishes were supposed to be resistant to checking as quickly : LOL I GUESS NOT

Wow, what a drag. Any chance you could post some pictures? I've never seen checking so extreme that chips would come off!

Fast changes in temp and/or humidity changes dimensions. Should be pretty much expected. Sorry, you tried to break the law - of physics...

I don't believe I have ever seen a fret board with etching : Hopefully it won't effect the play over time

When I played in Colorado, I’d go from well below freezing into a club with a roaring fireplace. I tried to give the Guild time to acclimate but sometimes it was hit the freakin’ stage. Then at the end of the night, the opposite. I have checking but nothing like that.

I had it happen before my eyes many years ago. Opening a case that had been in a trailer for at least a day traveling in the super (super) cold single digits cold rushing to get setup in Detroit. Saw it and heard it crack. No chipping but no real turning back from it either.

Sorry to hear what happened. I live in south Florida and played many outdoor gigs in the summer and never had that happen.

Here's a better shot of the neck when teh lighting changed : Like I said I'm mainly concerned this might effect the fret board : If it does't I am ok

Time to sell it! Make an extra 500 bucks for the relic job! Advertise as “relic’d using an all natural, earth-conscious process” LOL Good Idea : Although since it's a couple years old I'm actually not upset : I showed it to my Guitar tech : He said He'd be surprised if the neck didn't start wearing fast and getting darker : He was actually surprised the neck Checked :He said he's done Relic jobs on Nitro finish and hasn't had much success getting the Necks to check up. I'm going to oxidize the hardware so it matches teh rest and just play it :

That's an extra $150.00 for the "baked" maple neck!

I took a cased D28 from house temp to the back seat of the car (negative teens temp) drove back to campus, parked and then walked to the dorm. when I woke the next morning and opened the case, it was heavily crazed. I also took the same guitar out to the Florida beech, no finish problems and worth ever ounce of potential damage. I don't care, me and that girl have too much history!
Aren't Fenders lacquered over poly? It could be the difference between the two finish's expansion rates. I'd say, as long as the wood doesn't warp, you've got a great story to tell.

That's so extreme, it must have blown your mind to hear and watch it happen.
If the neck is uncomfortable to play, and if it was mine, I would consider taking some clear nitro lacquer and thinning it out about 10/1, then lightly spraying the fretboard with a tiny touch up spray gun. Mask off everything else but the fingerboard and hit it with a light coat of mainly thinner spray. You might be able to get the lacquer to fill itself in. The idea being to very quickly almost liquify the finish and with a light touch you could get just enough on it so it would re-join the cracks and the thinner would flash off quickly. Lacquer is easy to work with.
It's something I've done with lacquer on other things besides guitars and it might just work. Talk to a pro...I'm just thinking out loud.

I'm probably the odd man out, but I think it looks Bitchin! You should be able to sell that for more than you paid to somebody who loves beat up guitars!

This event sounds like it may be worth sending to His Royal Highness Dan Erlewine and see what he thinks, especially about the fretboard. I saw where he’s doing some Q&A on YouTube during the pandemic.

Nitro will totally do that, yeah--must have been a pretty extreme temp difference between indoors and out. Polyurethane finishes--on most of the lower-end Fender stuff, ironically--are much more resistant to checking. I think it's pretty unlikely it can be repaired, although you could probably seal those spots where it's chipping. Dan Erlewine would for sure be a good guy to communicate with--he literally wrote the book on guitar repair (I helped him edit it, back in the day), and he's come up with a ton of cool repair tricks over the years--so, you never know.

I love it! And would definitely keep that one and play it extensively. I’ve tried unsuccessfully to get a gold top to that, even with extreme temp changes. I wouldn’t worry about the wood under it warping, the neck will be fine being as it’s maple. It’s really cool as is, congrats.

I agree it looks awesome - love the gold! But I'm sure it was a shock when it happened, so I understand the disappointment. Not what you were expecting. But at least now you have a good story about that guitar. Here's a picture of the guitar in my profile: a '87 62 Reissue in Candy Apple Red, all relic work done by yours truly over a couple hundred gigs. If it's a good enough guitar, you get over the dings eventually. This one's going in the box with me when I pass.

Whenever wood gets heated it provides an opportunity for internal stresses to release and change dimensions, flatness and straightness. You'll see the majority of changes once it returns to room temp. BUT, the potential is there. If you want to warp a board, put it in the sun.
