I am a new owner of a Route 66 (serial#028) MFG date code M-10298 (?) and while viewing the tube setup noticed that the 5U4 rectifier had been replaced with a SS model SS484 running at 464 V. would anything have been done to make the change to SS from the original tube I should be aware of?
While not original spec is it worthwhile swapping back to a tube rectifier and with that in mind would it matter if it's a 5U4(G)(B) or similar? What about a mil-spec tube like a 5931?
Lastly, ST shaped or straight bottle for reliability?
Thanks in advance for the assist!
George

Not sure what SS484 is? Assuming its a standard plug in SS rectifier, than ya, no prob putting the 5U4GB or GZ34 Back in. It would be best to check the bias for optimal performance.
Regarding shape, im no expert on 5U4GB, and personally use GZ34 in my early 66.

Thanks for the reply!
The SSR was a Sovtek SS rectifier, and it felt and looked cheap. The Yellowjacket YJR I found laying around the house was a good SS replacement for this (Metal body & 4 times the weight, solid construction)until I get the proper tube rectifier back in it's place. The reference numbers in my first post were taken form what a tech wrote on the panel next to the socket location, so it was probably a voltage/bias reference...

DC here!
Changing the rectifier on the Route would likelely mean a re-biasing of the idel current as well. (The Route66 is not self biasing)

Hey George! Welcome to the Forum! A lot of good information and great people here. Not sure where your idea of SN #28 came from but your manufacturing code of M-10298 is the serial number. M means 2002; the 10 is model number (Route 66 = 10); and the 298 is the number of Route 66s that have been made up to and including yours (so yours would be the 298th Route made).
