Hi all! To start i would like to say i am a big Z fan: 3 heads and 3 cabs. Love the 3 heads and 2 of the cabs. My struggle is the Z best cab. Something just don't sound right. First thought the cones needed to be broken in. Years later, then thought maybe the standard speakers were the problem as i am not a fan of the standard V30. (The Mesa V30s in sealed Recto cabs are different apples.) Now i am wondering if the issue is the port itself.
Here is basis of my concern: the Celestion website says (1) ported cabs should not be used with guitar speakers and (2) Thiele cabs need to be designed and very specifically tuned to the speaker used, and only make a difference with frequency below standard low E string. Apparently the port creates a negative pressure that causes the speaker to move further than it should which could potentially damage to the speaker. I would postulate that this "negative pressure" alters the "natural" feel of the speakers as they are not behaving in traditional fashion. Might explain part of my general unhappiness with the Z Best thus far. Please see the Celestion website if you don't follow or think i am posting fake news.
So here is the issue. Recently picked up an awesome 7 string with beautiful, full low B string sound: actually feels like playing a bass guitar (with lighter strings of course). Played through the Z best, the Z Best cab sounds the best it has. The G12H really breaks up and has an awesome distorted sound. The V30 side comes alive. So what is the beef you ask? Well if the Celestion site (and my ears) are right, this is potentially a damaging situation.
Seeking more information from a third party, i contacted Scumback speakers with questions. Absolutely great guy who responded quickly by phone. He confirmed my concern re: Thiele ported guitar cabs with a qualification: heavy magnet speakers like V30 and G12H will be less affected than lighter magnet / lower watt speakers like "M" magnets, greenbacks, etc. Thought some of you would want to consider this information when you are considering non standard speakers or if you are pushing standard speakers hard / playing lowered tuning.
So that's as far as i have got with this to now. Curious as to whether any of you have traveled further up this road / had troubles with lowered tuning into the Z Best?
Finally, has anyone tried the Z Best with lower frequency rated H55 style speakers that were initially used as bass speakers in the 60's but later by some famous 70's rock guitarists?
cheers,
jay
