I'm late to responding to this thread Dave, except for a burst of emotion! lol Anyway, It takes the right one. I wasn't much on Teles until I discovered a Custom Shop '63 Deluxe model in Candy Apple Red. I loved it so much, I found another CS '63 to go with it. Both make within a couple of months of each other. I actually prefer Tele's over Strats, but still love Strats too.
I've played the CAR one so much, it needs a major tune up including a fret job. If we can ever get out of COVID19, I'll come visit and bring one.

I'm the opposite. I tried les Paul's, strats and everything and nothing feel like home compared to a telecaster. The bodys curves throw me off and im never certain where to rest my palm on my picking hand. The closest I was able to make work is a les Paul special that has the "slab" body with P90's. Everything else seems foreign to me. It's a classic sound, countless great songs are done on a Tele. I have and love Strats, 4 of them. I dig Gibsons too, from Les Pauls to V's to Explorers to 335's. I have an Epi Casino that I love. They all have different feels to them but I love each one for it's individuality.
I've owned three Teles and I just can't get into them. I went looking for one about 20 years ago and tried out at least 15 or 20 of them. Everything from a Squire to a Fender Custom Shop Tele. I couldn't get into any of them and ended up buying a G&L ASAT Classic, American made. I traded an amp and some cash for it, it was a $1500 guitar back around 2000. I had it ten years and I just couldn't ever really love playing it. I ended up giving it to a friend who's only Strat got stolen. He's a pro and needed a good electric, and he dug it so I helped out a brother.
I don't understand why I can't get into a guitar that I WANT to get into. I still want a great Tele but what to do? Maybe I'm just not a Tele guy. Love their sound though and I want it.

I don't bond with them either, like they just don't make the sound I want to hear. Sometimes they are the right sound for something specific you are going for, but that's like 1% of the time for me.

I’ve always thought there’s some connection between the kind of guitars you bond with and the kind of guitars your hero’s or key inspirations played. I’ve never bonded with LPs, but my formative years were built around listening to Terry Kath, Hendrix, Clapton, and not so much Page. I’ve always bonded with single coils, whether Strats or Tele’s. That’ll be $.05

I learned how to play on a tele . Started with Fenders . Even a few Customshops. Finally a Crook . A Few years back ObamaCare destroyed my livelihood. At the same time I had heart vascular and cancer issues all at the same time. I needed money . So I sold all of my gear , My Guns , My Motorcycles to survive. When I started to get back on my feet a few years ago . I ran into a Fender Stratocaster American reissue with a 10 radius neck. It was a really good deal so I bought it . I started guitar later in life . I'd played Teles for 25 years . Now owning a Start for the first time . I far prefer the tone . PLUS it's just alot easier to play . The Tele fights you . I can imagine for someone with an extended middle even more so. i honestly think I'd have gotton better faster had I played Strats to begin with Were I to advise a Beginner I would say Strat over tele . From a playable standpoint alone

I put a split rail small humbucker in my American Standard Tele. It is brighter than the typical full size humbucker but warmer than a traditional Tele bridge pickup. It's a little gainer and breaks up nicely to.
