So my CV65 sounds great, but with the Z28 its a bit loud even with the Brake Lite. So I went to the shelf and pulled my old Tone Tubby 40/40 that I retired. Hell ya, I've got the Z28 almost halfway attenuated down two to three clicks and its sounds great. The little extra breakup from the TT makes it pretty killer. I'm thinking of loading up the 2x10 with some TT's as well.

My Z28 was always great with the TT 40/40 Ceramic--it pretty much beat every other speaker I tried it against with that amp.

My Z28 was always great with the TT 40/40 Ceramic--it pretty much beat every other speaker I tried it against with that amp. You will enjoy my backstory then. I bought a TT 4x12 used on eBay, after watching Warren Haynes playing through one. It arrived at my house in IL from CA looking more like a parallelogram than a square. Worse of all the speakers were crackly. So after contacting the seller, and him giving me the finger, I contacted Tone Tubby and John (RIP) called me himself. He felt really bad that I took the short end of the stick and offered to sell me a set of four at cost. I told him, I appreciated it, but I could not except. What I wanted to know was why the speakers had a piece of tape on them that said "NEW DS". He chuckled, then sighed and said "Those stand for Double Stamped, and are one of only two cabinets that are loaded with them. " "Your cabinet and Warren Hayne's Cabinet". I then almost started to cry, but at the time, I didn't have the money to buy more and that cabinet sat. I ended up straightening it a couple years later, regaled it repaired it and stripped the Tolex. I ended up selling it to a friend who finished it, I sold it to him for $25 to get it out of the house. He called me one day and sent me a picture of the finished project, and said I sent you something in the mail enjoy. A day later one of the speakers arrived at my house with a note that just said. "One still worked". I have had this speaker ever since and it goes in amps and comes out, and having other TT of the same vintage over the years, this one sounds different and has a million hours on it. It may have just found its forever home with this amp and that Mather Cab I just ordered.

How does that speak sound in general? EQ wise? Is it "like" any more common speakers? I've never tried a TT.

How does that speak sound in general? EQ wise? Is it "like" any more common speakers? I've never tried a TT. To me--and I guess everybody's ears seem different--the TT 40/40 ceramic, specifically (not the red alnico or others), seems like the best incarnation of what a Celestion G12H-30 is trying to be. Big magnet means LOUD, with big lows & highs-- just like the G12H-30. But the TT seems to have a less sharp or bright hi-end, and the mids are actually there and musical (not scooped out and papery sounding like a lot of Celestions). Did I mention it's loud?

Its no secret that it is based off the G12H30. Its loud, but since its not searing in the midrange it doesn't seem as loud as some speakers. Its also pretty bullet proof. I ran the Ghia through it today and it really likes the Ghia too, so i'm pretty happy that it likes both amps and their characters come out.

I like the G12H30 types. Have the Celestion 70th anniversary in my Z28, have a Scumback H75 65 watt in another amp. I did have it in the Z28 and it was great, but I like it better in my Valvetrain. The Celestion can be brighter, less smooth in the highs than the Scumback. Normally that's a negative, but I think it works in the Z28, an amp I love but dont consider "bright." The Scumback has huge tight lows, moreso than the Celestion, and the Valvetrain benefits from that. The H75 crunches better too; its staying in the Valvetrain.
Might try a TT for the Z28 if I come across one.

FWIW, I loved the TT 40/40 Ceramic with the Therapy, too. Who'd have guessed?!? I really expected the V30 or G12M-65 to conquer with that amp, but nope--not for me, at least.

I like it in this smaller cab, the cab is a bright and it works super well with this speaker. I used to use two greens in a Budda 2x12 a handful of years ago and that one sounded great. I also had a TT 2x12 that was a wonderful speaker cab.

Well, I decided to make this a permanent move. I ordered two 10" Tone Tubby's, 1 Green and 1 Red to go in the 2x10 Shorty. I'll see if I have the same result with these as I did with the 12". I ordered them broke in, hope it turns out.

I forgot that I started the 40/40 Thread sorry. I did not like the swap after I did. My old TT12 sounds different from any of the new ones that I have tried in the past couple of years, but the truth is that have the 10's and 12's together was more like a big wall of sound rather than them complimenting each other.
I played with the Texas Heat and the Different 10's but with the Z28 and the Heat there was too much bass. I wanted the 12 to add some bass, but not be distracting. So I ended up putting the CV65 Back in the 1x12 and put two Alnico Red Fangs in the 2x10. They sound great separate and together with the Z28. To give the 2x10 a little more flexibility I did order the RF10C in a 16ohm from Emi this week. It will take 4 to 6 weeks to get it, but I think it will add a little snap to the 2x10 if I choose to use it by itself at any time.
I did think about trying to load that set of cabs with a Blue Tick Hound and some Ram Rods, but I think I found what works for me. I already have three Tone Tubby's i'm going to have to move and loose my but on. I will also have to get me a 1x12 to load that Tone Tubby 12 into that I have had forever. I love that speaker.

I really love my Tone Tubby 40/40 12", and I think it is a recent/newer one. But I'm just basing that by the graphics on the back (it doesn't have the muscle arm logo, which I guess is older?). I don't see a date on it.
Anyway, it is a very loud, full-frequency "tell it like it is" kind of speaker. Whatever your amp sounds like, this speaker will show it. Maybe it pushes the bass a bit more, but not in a fake way. The low end still sounds tight, not flabby. It is perfect for smaller 1x12 cabinets because it will make them sound bigger than they actually are.

As for the logo, for some reason they make them both way currently. Nothing like confusing the market. The older ones the arm logo is a bit different and they usually have a sticker on the side giving the date and moth it was built. I have A/B'ed a new one and the old one, the difference are not extreme.

After spending a ton of time with my Carmen Ghia and my newly acquired 19x19 cabs, I finally swapped in a 40/40 into one of the 19x19 cabs. It sounded great, and I pulled the Z28 out and put it into the 19x19 with the 40/40 and I love it. Z Verb into the Z28 with the Z Brake into that little cab is tight, punchy and detailed. Its a nice tidy rig that would fit on any stage and sound great.

Still stuck on the 40/40 for the Z28. Telecaster-Vanilla Zendrive-Zverb-Z28-Tone Tubby 40/40.
