If you were running 2 speakers (proper ohmage) together in a 2x12 with DIFFERENT sensitivity ratings, say 97 and 100, would you hear the one overpowering the other, or would it not be very noticeable?

One would be significantly louder than the other. That might be a good thing depending on the balance you want.

People do this often. Remember the Duke Ellington rule: “If it sounds good, it is good.”

I echo the above. Try it and see if it's the sound you want. I forget who posted on here about how Tab Benoit uses two different amps simultaneously because of how they compliment each other.

My old ears tell me it depends where you are standing in relation to the cabinet. I have a 2x12 horizontal cab loaded with a Greenback(98db) and a ASW KT-70 (100db) and if you move to the left the right speaker is dominant and vice-versa. But the combination sounds glorious with my Z- Plus as well as my Z Wreck Jr! So if your playing live, the girl dancing on the left will say "that Greenback sounds awesome" and the girl on the right says "that KT-70 kicks butt!"

And the huge guy standing between them says "Quit looking at my sisters like that, but man those two speakers sound killer right up hear in front."

When I have had a cab with two different speakers I usually place it vertical with the less efficient speaker on top. That way the horizontal dispersion is more equal. Just my way. Honestly it only matters when you are close like on stage. After you get as far away as the typical front row of an audience it hardly matters.

On paper, it would seem the 100db speaker would drown out the 97db speaker. But in reality, there are places and times this could work.
What if you don't WANT too much of the lower db speaker? Perhaps just a little bit of tone from the lower db speaker to compliment the higher db speaker.
And like zpilot said...with vertical cab, having a lower db speaker on top could make them blend to your liking in a live gig situation.
There is no right or wrong.
