FleaWreck mentioned something in the "Blue Sky or El Cap" thread that got me thinking :
" .... --the clicky-ness of a lot of bucket-brigade type delays with harder attacks (the peak of the note very present at the beginning of the repeat) can really start to bug me after awhile. "
Yeah, me too ! It's bad with my TC Flashback. I would say it's more than a click, ... more like pop.
So my question is, is this pop typical of analog delays ? Do digital delays make the pop ? How about tape delays ?
I need to find a delay that doesn't add a pop at pick attack. Thanks for your help.

Good idea. Paging Keith, Paging Keith .... please answer the Z phone. Interesting, I have never noticed anything like that before. Maybe it’s there but I just accept it as the way it is. This week I’ve actually been toying with some of the newer delays I had bought over the last while. This evening I’ll try a few to see if I noticed anything. I have a TC Electronic Alter Ego so I’ll try that as well.

Thanks Keith. BTW, it gets more noticeable the higher the FX level. At low levels, it's not very noticeable.

Thanks Keith. BTW, it gets more noticeable the higher the FX level. At low levels, it's not very noticeable. I've spent a couple evenings now rolling through various delay pedals and for the most part was ready to say that it was something I wasn't hearing. However, with most pedals with the mix/fx level up really high and set for slapback (so the repeat comes really close on the heels of the original note), I get an effect similar to what you are describing. However, to me that's more due to the fact that the repeated note is as loud (or louder) than the picked note. I rarely run the mix level past 60%-70% or so so I never really noticed that before. Except for those instances, I found no other settings on any pedal to give any artifact like you are referring to.

Thanks for checking Keith.
On my TC Flashback, the pop seems to be the strongest on the 2290 setting. It's a little less noticeable on the slap back setting. Kind of a bummer ... it's really noticeable when I make a lame attempt at playing with Edge or Gilmour/Floyd repeat levels.
So I gots to know. Out of your vast delay collection, what are your favorites ??

Out of your vast delay collection, what are your favorites ?? Interesting. I have the Alter Ego (which is the Pro Guitar version of the Flashback) and I think that has the 2290 on it as well. Later tonight I'll run the 2290 emulation to see if I can replicate your problem. I wondering if the pedal is being clipped or similar? Fav delay? Well, I love my original JHS Panther. It looks fantastic sound great. It's a great analogue delay with some modulation as well. Big knobs and big footprint. It's great. I love that when running clean amps. However, for simplicity I really love the MXR Carbon Copy Bright. I like the Carbon Copy, too, but the Bright has a smidge more clarity and when the modulation in the pedal is used it gives the repaets a voice-like, choral vibe. It's simple too. I have some quirky pedals with loads of paramaters to tweak (Chase Bliss, Strymon, etc.) but I seem to lean towards the simple ones more. Who would have thought

How about tape delays ? .... it's really noticeable when I make a lame attempt at playing with Edge or Gilmour/Floyd repeat levels. I'm a total delay junkie. I've only heard popping or artificial artifacts if the pedal was overloaded, or clipping as Keith pointed out. If you're running it after overdrive, boost, dist, try turning down the level and see if it goes away? Over the years I have found out that when using high delay levels with longer repeats the first repeat can be too loud with some pedals. There is a preprogrammed ratio between the level of the first repeat, and the level tapering off as each additional repeat happens. I've found pedals with a seperate level for the first repeat are more useful to me. It can be labeled many things, saturation, age, record level or whatever. But it essentially controls the level of the first repeat. So for Floyd type stuff where you have a long ambient string of delays it let's you tuck the first repeat back but still be able to hear the string of repeats. Pedals like this essentially have two levels. A general level or mix, and first repeat level. It let's you adjust the ratio between the first repeat and the following string of repeats. My current favorite delay is the Strymon Volante, but it's a big feature laden pedal. The Catlinbread Bell Epoch is a great simple pedal with control over the first repeat. Sounds great as well! Give it a whirl!

What setting on the Flashback? It's not present on the tape delay setting, to my ear--but it's there on the analog setting. That pop sound is what makes analog delays great for slapback effects, but of you're just using delay for thickening/doubling as I generally do, it'll make you crazy. It's a product of the delay's attack, seems to me==you want that hard attack for some things, like slapback, but not so much for other, subtler delay effects, maybe.

Guys, thanks for your replys. I'm using my delay in the (Maz 8) FX loop, so shouldn't be any clipping. Delay signal chain is : FX Loop Send > TC Flashback > Supernatural Reverb > Keeley 30ms Double Tracker > FX Loop Return
Keith, thanks for the info on those pedals. I'll check them out. I like the simpler pedals too.
Nicholas, I like the idea of controlling the level of that first repeat. I guess some of the tape echo type delays that allow you to adjust the level of the "repeat heads" would work good for that.
FleaWreck, on my Flashback, I notice it the most on the Analog, 2290, & Slap settings. I tend to use those settings most of the time. I'll try the Tape setting again to see if it's any better. Haven't used that one for a while.
Like you say, I can get around the pop with lower repeat levels, but that makes it pretty hard to get my Gilmour on.
Thanks for your help guys.
Edit to add : I checked some of the other delays on the Flashback. The Tape, Lofi, & Mod delays also make the pop sound. On some, it's a little less noticeable than others. Also, the pop occurs on the original note, not just the repeats. It's very noticeable unless I turn the Fx level down to where it's basically a reverb pedal. Think I need a new delay pedal.
