Greetings: I purchased my Cure amp used and it currently has a pair of matched (Apex) JJ power tubes with the rating #32. I wish to purchase a back-up pair, but first am trying to figure out if these power tubes are stock or have been replaced by the original owner. If they are not the original JJ power tubes, what rating # is on the stock power tubes when the Cure amp leaves the factory? Are they consistent? Furthermore, I have heard that the higher the rating# on JJ power tubes, the more headroom the tube has - is this true with respect to JJ's power tube numbering system? thanx for your time and assistance. cheers

The original tubes in my Cure have the current rating of 42 on them. I imagine they put a range of tubes in these amps.

Got my Cure used and don't know what the rating on the tubes were. I order my tubes from Tubes and More, which I believe is where Z gets them, so I'm guessing whatever they send me is correct for the amp. You could contact Tubes and More and ask.

It has been said, etc.., and it might be true about a slightly higher current rating, but I doubt you will ever be able to detect the difference. If you have the opportunity at Antique Electronics or similar then ask for a pair with a current rating of 42 as dona had mentioned.

The original tubes in my Cure have the current rating of 42 on them. I imagine they put a range of tubes in these amps. Yes. One would need to get the translation of the number system to Groove Tubes, etc. but back in the day I recall that Doc spec'd his amps to perform with a set of "Medium" tubes (especially the cathode-biased amps). In Groove Tubes, that meant a range of 4-7 in the rating system, IIRC. I suspect the number system talked about in this thread may translate to a base 100 system. So, a 42 mat be a 4.2 or 4 range. The 32 may be a 3.2 or 3 range. Overall, I'd say pretty close to the medium range.

I'm not an expert, but I believe that 42 is 42mA (milliamps). I had ordered a set of 6V6 power tubes for a friend's tweed Deluxe clone. They had 44 on them and they ran too hot. The vendor then sent me a pair with 32 on them and they ran fine.
I imagine that bluesboy52 could request a set of tubes in a specific range to be similar the ones that are in their amp now.
