I have a Strymon Flint, which is a pretty great pedal. Anyone own the BlueSky or the El Capistan? Your thoughts, if you please! (Somehow I’m jonesing for a new pedal, a bit out of character for me!)

I have an El Capistan. I'm very pleased with it. It has the ability to emulate all of the flutter and age that an Echoplex can sometimes have which makes it better than a straight delay/echo. I used to have an Echoplex so I appreciate that. The one thing it does not do, at least not well, is the effect of the Echoplex's preamp. If you want that you will need to pair it with something like an Exotic EP Booster. I am using a ClinchFX Pico Pre. I run the pair as the first thing in my signal chain whereas I run my analog delay after my dirt pedals.

I had the el cap for years and recently switched to the echoplex. The el cap is the cream of the crop it does so many things so well. I am pretty much a set it and forget it guy. I like the simplicity of the echoplex You get much more options with the strymon. I like the echoplex though.

I have the Blue Sky and the Big Sky. As you can probably discern, I got the Big Sky first, was quickly overwhelmed, panicked, then traded locally for the Blue Sky. I love both pedals, great verb and shimmers. The Blue is easy to dial in some great ambient effect and is no slouch. The Big is just awesome, but takes a pandemic to fully understand and use it to its potential. Well, the pandemic is here and still have yet to master it...

The el Cap is excellent, and it has the advantage of also having a fairly subtle "spring" reverb that can be dialed up as one of its hidden functions. What I like about the el Cap, aside from its versatility, tap tempo, etc., is that it's got a soft, tape-like attack--the clicky-ness of a lot of bucket-brigade type delays with harder attacks (the peak of the note very present at the beginning of the repeat) can really start to bug me after awhile. That said, I don't do a whole lot of inventive stuff with delay--no Edge-style dotted 8ths, or whatever--I generally like it as a fattening or slight doubling underlay, and the el Cap is more than sufficient for that kind of thing. The only downside for me is stereo outs but only a mono input, but since I'm pretty unlikely to actually run stereo in a live setting it's not a big deal.

I had a Blue Sky briefly--excellent reverb, iirc, but I wasn't using a lot of reverb at the time and ended up selling it. Between the two I'd definitely go for the el Cap--you've already got the reverb thing covered with your flint.

As far as Tape Echo sounds you can get everything from very Atmospheric types of tape echo/delay sounds to that classic Jimmy Page Tape Echo slap back. Gives you a lot of control over the sound and tone as well. Don't have any experience with the BlueSky though. I do know the Flint and El Cap work well together though.

I have the BluSky, IMO, it’s the best pedal based reverb. It sounds less like a reverb pedal and more like a a microphone in a large room. I almost bought the Flint before getting the BluSky but felt the trem side would be wasted so I went with the BluSky and never looked back. Its the same with all Strymon products, quality is paramount and tone is second to none. Happy Gassing!

I actually have both and I would purchase both again. That said, I'm curious about the Meris Mercury 7 reverb. Not because I am unhappy with the BluSky...just interested in the sonic possibilities of a different pedal. Also, I am downsizing my board and the DD-500 affords me much needed presets, which means the El Cap will have to leave. I've just had a hard time committing to selling it...it's really good, I've just got to downsize and offload gear. (until I see a video of someone doing something really cool w/ the El Cap or BluSky...then I end up holding onto them for another 6 months... 🥴)
