And I completely understand about what you did NOT being an upgradeable thing. But, what COULD be? You were talking about tweaking the circuit, giving less bass, etc. I understand the PPIMV was the main upgrade, but I have a Brake Lite, have lived without MV for a long time.

Actually not much Ben. This is a complete rebuild including the chassis. Is it still a Z 28 , well a comparison video of old and new will tell that story. Understand I do have a couple of projects ahead of this, so don't look for this soon, as well as the COVID-19 delaying any production. I just dusted the Z 28 MKII off while I was visiting my closed shop, and felt a little inspiration to work on an amp that I wasn't 100% pleased with in its currant state.
The transformation was rather extensive , but I feel it keep the DNA of the Z 28 just enhanced and updated. It kind of developed into a very cool original Z Amp. Utilizing my EF 86 base format, the Triad Vintage OT, the way cool 5881 Output Tubes for a more Vintage Fender response, A PPIMV Master Volume of my design that works very well, built on a larger MAZ style chassis for more real estate, and a 2X10 combo utilizing the Alnico speakers I developed for the Joe Walsh Signature 3X10 amp. All in all a good days work.

Going to be another Killer Z! Its gonna have that sweet spot club output like the Jetta, enough oomph to be authoritive, but very manageable at these lower volume stages we clubbers play these days. And that Z designed EF86 Preamp is so cool both on its own (cranking straight in) and with pedal boards (high headroom that works stellar with verbs and delays). Cathode Biased 5881’s and those Alnico Z10’s Oughta lean it a bit towards vintage Tweed... maybe even a bit of Route66 in the character, and again the PPIMV icing on the cake. Oh ya!

I'm pretty excited about this one. I'm putting my pennies away. I have not bought a new amp in a LOOOONG time. As for the original Z28, it is pretty authoritative and feels like a bigger amp.
Oh, can we get the option of Nova Esthetics ? I want a head with oxblood to match my cabinets. LOL I do love the look of the Nova, can't believe I haven't bought one of those yet.

OK a small update on the Z 28 MKII. I went back to a 1x12 format, I just like that a bit better over all especially in overdrive mode. Haven't tried too many different 12's yet, but keep going back to the Z 28's original Greenback, that with the 5881's give it a kind of early JTM-45 vibe which is very addicting. Yes it will be released as a head as well. Also have been experimenting with PI tubes. Found the new Electro Harmonics 7025 to be a great choice. Rich harmonic clean drive, as well as thick smooth overdriven tones. I will try and get a comparison video done this month for your dining and dancing pleasure.

Would love to know your thoughts on this speaker. Seems like it would be a good Alnico option where greenbacks are typically used.

The alnico cream sounds so great with the Z28! I would hope that the Ruby would as well.

Doc Im so glad you went with the 1x12 over the 2/10 It will also make it easier for those who would like to try different speakers with it. It just makes more sense.

I'm also happy with a 1x12, personally I just prefer that size in a combo.
Really looking forward to hearing how this turns out. JTM-(ish) sounding with 5881 output tubes...in my head I'm imagining this will be a Z'ified Dirty Shirley.

I’m super happy Lance played it dry, it sounds like it should. A very honest representation of this amp.

My son now has my original Z 28. Perhaps it’s time for dear old dad to reload 😁

I have two originals and one of the MKII Prototypes. AMAZING, AMAZING Amps, my favorite of all time. This is the amp for the guys that love the sound of a vintage amp, but also want to use their pedals. You can play the amp with nothing in front of it for vintage tone at any level, or turn your whole pedalboard on in front of it and it will sound amazing. For the vintage amp guys that dismiss master volume amps, this one will make you a believer. Dr. Z floored me with this amp. You guys ready to sell me those “Gold Panel” Z28’s yet? You know you want a MKII

After all these years I think is safe to say I am a huge fan of the Z-28 ( and several other models). I have inquired to my local dealer for the new Mk II. The question now is, will I go with a head to match the two original Z28s I currently have or should I get a bit wild and order the combo to sit alongside my Galaxie. Decisions decisions decisions Cheers always Joel

Absolutely a combo. A big part of this amp's magic comes from the special cab that gives it an incredible three dimensional vibe. You feel like the sound is coming from everywhere. It's the best amp I've ever played. Ever.

Will the Z28 MK II chassis fit in my Maz head cabinet?
