well, the British big 6 thread is no longer here, but I'll start the Oz version anyway-i was 17 when Men at work broke in North America, and the floodgates opened from the Australian music scene, and I have had a life long love of dozens of great bands from down there. Here's my big 6 lp's from the Australian rock scene. Radio Birdman-Radios appear Hoodoo Gurus-Stoneage Romeos The Saints-Live in a Mudhut AC/DC-Powerage Celibate Rifles-the turgid miasma of existence Birthday Party-It's still living

Got to give a mention to Chrissy Amphlett (RIP) when I think of Aussie bands. Gob smacked the first time I saw this video on MTV. That pout could stop a bus ... errr tram. I think Mark McEntee deserves more recognition as a guitar player too.

Lol, I wasn't sure until I just looked it up I think Split Enz was formed in NZ. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowded_HouseSo, seeing how that one is a quirky one, I'll go with: The Waifs-Up All Night I haven't listened to the Waifs in a long time...may have to blow the dust off tonight.

These are my Six OZ greats: AC/DC: Highway to hell Hoodoo Gurus: Blow Your Cool Radio Birdman: Radios Appear DM3: One time, two times... Paul Kelly: Wanted Man Wishbone Ash: Live Dates Johnny Diesel And The Injectors
I’d add Midnight Oil’s ‘Diesel and Dust’ too, and I’m completely sure that I’m missing lots of great stuff. Tons of tone!!

You young guys overlooked The Easybeats. Friday On My Mind is an absolute masterpiece of a pop tune. Thanks for the compliment on age, Mike!!!! I thought about mentioning them, but one single song was not enough. I could get me a good Easybeats' greatest hits compilation (on tape!!!!!) back in '94 when I visited Australia, and I found some other great singles there too. No doubt that was a great hit!

Yes, it was Harry Vanda and George Young, their older brother. They also produced some of their first recordings.

Yup,Vanda and Young are responsible for the great raw,in your face sound of everything up to highway to hell.Like you were standing in front of the stage at a club gig.Like how on 'hellaint a bad place to be' the bass rattles the snare drum. They also were 'flash n the pan' and made this great song.

I always say I am geographically challenged. I would have gone with Crowded House too even though I do remember they were originally New Zealanders. Well, sounds like I would have been half right. I always dug that Flash & the Pan tune. The Mrs & I saw the Divynls. Always remember that night because I drove my car home from work and it started smoking. I kept driving. It kept smoking. I kept driving. The trans started slipping. It kept smoking. I kept driving ... It finally caught on fire about 8 blocks from home. It was convenient that the fire station was only two blocks away. What do they say about sometimes making poor decisions? We did make it to see the Divynls that night.

Admittedly my knowledge of Aussie bands does not go very deep but I do have 3 real favorites.
The Seekers featuring Judith Durham The Little River Band AC/DC
Make that 4. Hillsong Music Australia. I'm not really sure that qualifies as a band. More like an organization or movement, but I'm going to list it anyway. After all, as of 2011 they have sold over 12 million records. That number is probably between 15 to 20 million currently. That counts for something.
