Much of my decision to get my Ray was for its clean tone. Just absolutely love it! But I noticed right away that my overdrive pedals don't interact the same with the Ray as with my Maz or Lux. Not necessarily in a bad way, just much different. So I find that any given OD pedal on my board that is setup for my Maz, would have to be setup quite differently for the Ray. And some of my OD's that I love with my Maz, I don't like at all with the Ray.
So here's my question(s) for y'all...
What overdrives do like to use with the Ray?
Is there a certain "type" of OD that just seems to "fit" the Ray?
Thanks in advance!

Mid-humped pedals, based on the tubescreamer, seem to work best. Modded TS style pedals, with less mid-hump, don't seem to work as well. Other dirt pedals with a mid control work well when you turn the mids up fairly high.
Another one....My Wampler Tumnus Deluxe works great with the Ray, and is probably my favorite OD to use with it.
Another thing, if you keep your tone below 11:00 (mine's around 10:00) and the cut fairly low (mine's on 8:00 - 9:00 with a Tele), this also helps quite a bit!
One other thing that really helped me, was a speaker swap. The Alnico Cream is the answer. It's mellower top end and fuller mid-range, really fills out the Ray's tone, while still sounding like the big beautiful clean machine it was made to be.

Based on my experimentation so far, I love the Creamback with the Ray! And I think that the Walpler Tumnus is my all time favorite drive pedal.

I like the tubescreamers with the EF-86 amps, as well.
I picked-up the JHS Bonsai and have enjoyed working through the “lineage” of tubescreamers that exist within that pedal.
