Has anyone tried a 5v4 rectifier in the Cure? I know that is a popular mod in with the Maz 18. Has anyone tried it with the Cure?

I don't know enough about electronics to know if that would do any damage. Before I would attempt that, I'd contact the factory.
There are several amp builders and EE's on here though that might know the answer

What about subbing 5881's for the 6v6's? Does anyone know if you can do that (or will it blow up the amp)?

I believe I read that you can sub the "larger" 6L6/5881 for the 6V6 (but not the opposite). Again, I'm not an expert so don't try this on my note.
Is there something you are trying to get out of the amp that it doesn't do stock?

More headroom. I'm a tube roller. I admit it.

More headroom. I'm a tube roller. I admit it. Gotcha. I personally address headroom with speakers. When I had my 1-10 Ghia w Red Fang, I tried a Gold based on many positive comments here. It sounded good, but I ran outa volume. It was the one and only time my band leader asked me to turn up and I couldn't do it. I really like the Lil Texas Neo in mine. It shaves off several lbs and increases efficiency. I highly recommend it, or a Red Fang which is one of the most efficient speakers out there. The RF is more in the 'Brit" camp while the Lil Tex is "US" leaning. Let us know what you land on.

You can use a 5v4 in your Cure and try it out. Some like the minute effect and some prefer the immediacy of the 5AR4. Most folks here end up discovering that their amp sounds best with the stock tubes. Z has a good ear.
It has been a few years since I’ve looked at the specs and pin out on 6l6 and 6v6 tubes. Certainly the 6l6 was designed to handle more plate voltage than a smaller 6v6. It also can dissipate more wattage as well. The question comes down to the output transformer. I wouldn’t put a 6l6 or 5881 in your amp because it may produce more wattage than the OT can handle at a given plate voltage, bias, and current. I don’t know the specs on that OT or that particular circuit, but I wouldn’t risk blowing your tranny. Keep those 6v6 in there.
Enjoy your Cure!
