I just got a Cure, and I like the tone with the JJ's, but I'm still curious if anyone has experimented with other tubes. I'm using mine with a Les Paul, and I have a reverb pedal running through the effects loop. Has anyone had success with anything other than the stock JJ's (or the Sovtek AR4)?
What tubes are you using?

I've replaced all of the tubes in my Cure with NOS, but didn't do any tube "substitution". It started with the rectifier for greater reliability, then it became the power tubes and finally the preamp. I'm in the process of doing the same with my Nova, which will most likely bump the Cure as my main gigging amp.
I've had one rectifier tube go down in my Ghia.....otherwise the stock tubes Doc ships have been solid for me.

There are a lot of posts in the Maz 18 section of this forum about tube substitutions. But mostly they are from people like me trying to make the amp less bright or have more gain. The Cure has neither of those issues, so it may be that most Cure owners stick with the stock setup.

The only tube I changed in my Cure was a JJ rectifier tube. I have tried other speakers I like better than the stock though.

I really liked the stock JJs in mine, great power and headroom when needed. In fact, l never changed any of the glass in mine.

As for speakers, I've used Eminence C-Rex and Lil Texas Neo (which is in it now). Both are great speakers and are slightly more efficient than Doc's speaker, but are very much voiced in the same camp as the Z 12 IMO.

Well I guess tube substitutions are not popular with Cure owners!!! That is interesting because they are popular with Z lux owners, and the Cure is based on that amp, right?
I'd like to try a 5v4 rectifier.
I noticed the Zlux has a Mullard ecc83 in V1 so that could be worth a look.
Also, I read in the Zlux forum you can substitute 5881's for the 6l6's. That seems intriguing too....

What speakers have you tried? I'm thinking maybe a Greenback.... Weber 12F150, Eminence Red White and Blues, Eminence GA64-12, Creamback 65, Celestion Classic Lead 80 (Mesa version) and probably a couple more I can't remember. I like the Weber and GA64 the best, so far.

Yeah, I'm thinking about the Weber too. The Cure is supposed to be voiced American, and the speaker in there sounds that way (less detailed but smoother). So that seems like a good fit.

I find the weber can be a bit bright and slightly harsh at times. It does sound clear and articulate though. The GA64 is less harsh and may be a little less clear. It's just barely broken in, so I don't know if it will settle in more.

My cure Is my main amp and i have 5 other killer amps. But i need low watts now. But no tube swaps needed in my opinion.
The zlux can use different power tubes so that why there is alot of talk about it.

I am using gold lion. For me, a much rounder focused sound than the jj’s.
