I don't get it. Why would Dr. Z use a Sovtek 5AR4 in the Maz. 18, but then a Shu Guang 5AR4 in the Z Plus? Is there a difference?

Docs really picky about the parts that are in his designs. Maybe one of the AR4s drops a hair more voltage than the other one or has more or less internal capacitance or sags more.

I noticed that too. I've heard the quality has been improved on Chinese tube production, and the label looks cool (Ha!) I have nothing to compare it too at this point as this is my first Z, and I'm loving the amp. To my ears, it sounds as good as the GT rectifier in Princeton. Has anyone swapped the tubes on the Z-Plus?

I think the Chinese tube is similar in construction to the JJ rectifier. The Russian AR4 looks a little different.
