Hi all I'm posting trying to create some interest back in the route 66 so the guys at Dr z might consider updating it with a variable boost, new master volume and what ever else it needs.
Everyone seems to love the amp but in my opinion if it were updated with the new master volume (so it's usable in more situations) it could be a very popular amp as the wattage and tone is right on.
With a dr z z lux (or MAZ 18) and the route 66 you would have every tone you need IMHO.

My favorite tube and my second favorite amp (ZWreck is my favorite amp, despite the absence of an EF86.) I agree that a great MV would be a nice enhancement.

The preamp/tone stack is pretty different. Not sure if the variable boost would apply to that circuit, but I’m not any sort of authority on that matter You could possibly pay the good Dr to install a MV mod if he was open to it. Always good to give him ongoing business 👍🏻

Would an amp with a single KT66 be sonically close enough and lower the power/volume sufficiently? I miss my RT66, which I used exclusively for about 3 years a dozen or so years ago.
disclaimer: I have little to no clue about designing amps

DC here!
Bought Route66 from Vintage Guitar in Norway in 2007.
About a year later (August 2008) I was privelidged to be invited
by Buddy Whittington to come on stage and jam with him and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in Berns Salonger (Bern's Saloons) Stockholm.
Bought my Route66 with the 2x10" cab removable backplate. Best amp in my hometown except maybe my Z-Wreck Combo
My Warmoth telecaster through the Route66 man....
that's the **** - as you're prone to say - lols
Cheers: Dixiechicken!
Above just me and the Bluesbreakers
Above with Mr Mayal himself

DC here!
Yes Doc it was.
In my first band "Feelbrüters" we played several tunes from Mayall's Bluesbrakers.
The singer guitarplayer in that band - my friend Dan - had just returned from Stockholm 1967. He had studied electrical engineering for three years - and heard John Mayall's Bluesbreakers at "Nalen".
(a famous music place - I think they have tried to resurrect it again )
The "A Hard Road" setting with Peter Green on guitar.
We played: Oh Pretty Woman, The Stumble, Steppin Out, Rubber Duck, ( for the drumsolo lols )
Sitting In the Rain, It Hurts Me Too, You Don't Love me - among other Mayall tunes.
In a way it was like going full circle, to jam with the man himself

I've never heard a 66 used in anger in person, but I'd love an M12-type thing with a little more oomph. Just a thought...

DC here!
The "Z-Caster" is pleked here in the Guitarworks luthier shop, Plus it's also "Buzz Feitenized" - aka the saddle is compensated - a bit at least - for the traditional temperament of guitars.

Thanks for posting those clips. I'm back here on the forum after having a hiatus for a few years. I suspect there's been a lot of new people join so many of you won't know or remember me. I've had a few Dr Z amps over the years and I'm looking forward to getting my hand on a Route 66 in the next few days on a swap deal as it's one of the models that always eluded me.

Dc here!
Really...+ 95 volts? I guess you lower it from 120 Volts to 95 then? Not 230/240 (EU/Sweden) down to 95 right...?
Hm not sure about that 25 volts down still seem a bit much to me, You'd better ask Doc about that.
Maybe the better route (pun intended) would be to change the power tubes ( different grading )
and/or the rectifier tube and re-bias the amp....? I dunno YMMV.
But ask Doc he knows - he is usually pretty quick to answer any questions you might have. Maybe now it will a little slower - due to the Covid-19 restrictions.
Any way good luck:

DC here!
Ahh thanks - can only speak for me and the missus. We are quite well thanks.
Of course we are not so heavily affected by the Covid-19 as some european countries. (Spain Italy France & UK)
And upp north in Västebotten/Umeå area - were we live - we are among the least affected areas in Sweden.
You too stay safe. and exercise a little extra cautions in these times.
Cheers: Dixiechcicken!

I’ll see what I do. It is one of my fav Z Amps. Please being it back doc with a master volume. It's a killer amp. But so loud I wasnt able to use mine to it's full potential. If the route 66 came back as new and updated with a master volume I'd be buying another one for sure!! And possibly make a combo option too?!

Howdy,
I'm retiring next year and would love a standard Route 66 as a retirement gift to myself! OK, maybe with a 1/2 power switch, but no master volume, please.

The Route 66 is my all time favorite amp. Nothing is even close. You can't improve on the 3 knob perfection. I like all my other amps, but the 66 always gets the most use..
