Hi Z-talk, this is my first post here.
i have a 2015 Maz 18 reverb in for the Mkii mods. It’s a 1x12 combo with the stock G12H30 speaker. It sounded very strident and I could never get it to sound nearly as good as my 2007 Maz Jr. NR, which has a Celestion Blue in it. That amp is epic, it will likely not be getting the mods. Back to the reverb version. I love the C-blue but want to put something different in it, unless it comes back from being modded and sounds very different.
I’ve been reading as many threads as I can find but would like to hear what speaker people are using with the Jr reverb combo, and what type of tones they are getting. Please describe what type of guitar(s) and the type of music and tone it excels at. If you have an example of a player or any songs that might illustrate that would be great.
i play mostly humbuckers in the bridge and more singles in the neck. Blues and Rock. I don’t usually play real loud, master is rarely above 5, plenty loud. I tend to use an od pedal out front and try to reach a tone nearing Joe Bonamassa type tones.
XXXXX
Which speaker would you recommend for a great mild to medium gain tone as well as beautiful cleans, and what speakers are you using and what kind of tone are you going for? As much detail as possible.
XXXXX
I’ve read a lot about the Gold, red fang, et-65, green back, cream back etc.
Thank you all, I look forward to your responses. I won’t be getting a silver jubilee, I love the Maz! ZZ - Honorable mention to Dr Z and his crew, they are beyond great!

I am fond of the Celestion Cream Alnico in the Maz series. I am going to try the Ruby Alnico in the Z-Plus soon.

My Maz reverb was 04 2x10 combo. I thought that was great, but alas was heavy. The Z-10’s were wonderful. The Z-12 in my Z-Plus is a great match to my ears.

You're probably gonna get several suggestions.
I like the Celestion Blue in mine, for clean and dirt tones.
A little semi-clean and some TS leads (not a blues player, so forgive the attempt):

I think I want to get something different. I hear people always talking about the speakers they love, but they don’t give a description or an example. Thank you

I leaned mostly towards the Vox side, though with a boost, I was pushing a plexi sound. I did on a couple recordings lean to blackface, but I primarily lived in the Vox realm.

G12H30 (as standard), to me it delivers everything the Jr can serve up. Giant sparkly cleans, ballsy bottom, big midrange. Just cant be shy to turn the treble down and use as much cut as you need to smooth out the top. Heres my MKII with G12H30

Here is a document that doctorice (Mike) here on the Forum put together that has the settings for different types of tones from the Maz 18. Good place to start rather than switching speakers (a whole lot easier ) michaelgiliberto.com/uploads/maz18_settings10_4.pdf

I’ve played around a good deal with the settings, and will start again from scratch, when I get the amp returned with the mkii upgrades. I want to like the stock g12h30 and it may need more breaking in.. I’ll definitely give it another shot before swapping, just doing a little preemptive research, you know, guitar gear nerding out.

Has anyone tried an American style speaker in the Maz, like a Jensen or an Eminence Patriot?

the Z-12 is an american sounding speaker. Designed by Eminence. I liked it in my NR for over 2 yrs. trying out the G12H30 for a while now. Like them both. Celestion Gold wes nice but sometimes a little too bright. Some have used the ET-65 from WGS and spoke highly of them. Good luck on your quest.

I have the one and only solution you will ever need, WGS ET65 British invasion speaker this doesn't all and very well. I can go from super reverb type sound to a singing rock sound with no pedals.
Forget all these expensive alnico speakers , unless your playing stages or a session guitarist it's a want not a need and in my 20 year opinion the et 65 will do just fine although the alnico speakers shine in their own way.

I have a Texas Heat that I may try to swap out the existing Avatar (G12H). It's worth a try. I'll report back if and when I do.
