I went to the Sovtek's website and ranked the 12 different pre amp tubes they sell by price. Here is what I got:
High Priced Tubes
1. Genalex B759 long plate 2. Genalex CV4004 short plate
Mid Priced Tubes
2. Tung Sol Gold Pin short plate 3. Mullard long plate 4. Mullard CV4004 short plate (Genalex Chinese short plate) 5. EH gold pin short plate
Low Priced Tubes
6. Svetlana short plate 7. Tung Sol short plate 8. Sovtek wb old plate structure 9. Sovtek wc old plate structure 10. Sovtek lps long plate 11. Sovtek wa old plate structure 12. EH short plate
I'm not sure what to take away from this. It looks like Sovtek thinks its a lot of the tubes it labels Genalex because they are priced to the moon. I personally think gold pins are a waste of money but Sovtek apparently disagrees. I guess my favorites tubes, the Svetlanas and Tung Sols, are cheapies compared to the similarly constructed Mullards and Genalex cv4004's. I remember when everyone raved about the new Sovtek lps and EH short plate. But now they cost less than Sovtek's lowly 12ax7 wa, wb and wc.

I left out the EH 7025.
So that's 13 Russian 12ax7's!

For what its worth, I have tried almost all of these in my Maz 18.
The Genalex are amazing tubes but ultimately too bright for me in the Maz.
The Mullards I wasn't impressed with.
Tung Sols I like but my personal favorite is the Svetlanas. I wish they had more gain, but they sound warm and smooth.
And, at my advanced age I like a warm, smooth tone best.
