I'm thinking of setting up my Strat with a HSS configuration. I have a couple PAF style humbuckers kicking around. The set is slightly over wound with the neck at about 7.7k and the bridge at 12K. I'm wondering what folks have found regarding the H pickup being way too powerful in comparison to the single coils and also that bridge+middle sound, if the bridge is really hot. I'm kinda tempted to stick my neck humbucker in the bridge position to see if it has a better balance. Overall, i want a bridge that isn't really bright or in your face, I'm more a fusion, pop jazzy guy and stay away from the harder sounds. Any thoughts..?

Assuming you are using a 5-way switch, you can wire the switch so that when you are in the bridge+middle position the humbucker will split, but when you go to full bridge you get it all. This assumes you have a 4 conductor humbucker. With a 12K humbucker you will get a 6K ish single coil, which, depending on the value of the middle single coil, may better match with the single coils. Using a humbucker and single in that position will get you some of the Strat quack. There is more bridge than middle in that position. Depending on the quack you like, it may be fine. You can also drop the humbucker way down if it's too potent and also tweak it by adjusting the individual screw pole pieces to help get what you want. The neck humbucker in the bridge should also work for the pop jazzy thing. If you do the split thing with it, you would have more middle in the in-between position, which may be warmer.

I just installed a Fralin Pure PAF at 8.2K to replace the single coil in my Carvin strat. I'm still working on the wiring and will report back.
From experience, I'm guessing 12K will overpower your other pickups.
