I'm interested in recommendations for pedals that straddle the distortion fuzz line... that is, I'd like something that has mostly distortion characteristics and not much fizz. Maybe a LITTLE fizz, but I'd like something that I can use for leads that need a little more hair than a boosted overdrive pedal but still maintain clarity. I've seen some demos for the old Earthquaker Blunderbuss that are in the ballpark, but can anyone lese make a recommendation?

I have the "black" from Spral electric fx, and it covers a lot of ground. Well worth a look.

I love the Fulltone Mas Malo. Josh from JHS gives it a nice shout out here:

I've been using the Wampler Velvet Fuzz for pretty much exactly this purpose--on the "tight" setting it's a fairly smooth distortion that can get into some serious high gain sounds; on the "big" setting it's a classic fuzz, basically, but with a useful tone control that allows you to dial out some of that fizz if you want. The right side of the Wampler Paisley Deluxe is very similar to the Velvet Fuzz also, to my ear.

+1 on the Velvet Fuzz. It's one of the very few fuzz pedals I like as it does straddle the distortion/fuzz territory IMO.

Chase tone Fuzz Fella may work but I have to agree with the Velvet fuzz based on the distortion fuzz you seek.

Chase Tone has a couple of pedals in that territory. A low gain Analogman Sunface will get you there if you roll off your volume. Also, Analogman’s Astrotone can be had at good prices second hand.
On the flip side, there are some really good overdrives with a hint of fuzz: Supro Drive, Analogman Beano Boost, Benson Preamp, Greer Soma, and Hudson Broadcast.
