I think Dr. Z should offer a 1x15 using the existing 1x12 cabinet. I wanted to test out some 1x15 speakers for my Fender Vibroverb clone I built and thought hey, I can just make a baffle board and it should fit into the Dr. Z 1x12's. Results are amazing. Sounds so good. I think it's a perfect size for a 1x15.

I did a similar thing with my 1X10 cab - turned it into a 1X12 - stealth mini stack!

Not to burst your bubble, but I don't think Doc would sell enough to make it worth his while.

Not to burst your bubble, but I don't think Doc would sell enough to make it worth his while. Nothing bursted. I obviously no longer need one. I'm just suggesting for everyone else. I don't think enough people consider the 15" speaker over the 12".

I never consider a 15” speaker for guitar. Heck, before ‘04 when I bought my Maz jr 2x10, I didn’t consider anything other than a 12”. What a sheltered life I led. I would love to hear folks take on the sonic beauty of the 15” guitar speaker.

I would love to hear folks take on the sonic beauty of the 15” guitar speaker. When I was in my late teens, a sales brochure from one of those late 70's/early 80's music warehouse stores arrived at my house. There was a picture of a stage and the guitarist's stack was a stack of 1x15 cabinets. I imagined a big full sound especially since they were 300 WATT SPEAKERs! I ordered a speaker and went to my local guitar shop, Fred's in Reading, PA, and said i needed an empty 1x15 cab. The only thing he had was a vented 1x15 that he warned wasn't a guitar cab. I was sold. I loaded that baby up with my 15" JBL 130(?), set it under my 50 watt Marshall, and played the clubs full time for the next 5 years or so. Gotta love the days when you would buy something just by seeing it in a sales brochure. No Internet/YouTube to check out reviews! So, my setup with the vented cab wasn't ideal. But, I had a good full focused sound with more depth vs a 1x12. I did get compliments on my sound along the way. When I eventually switched to a 1x12 open back, I felt like I was getting a more classic 'guitar' sound. (The piezo's were added when I used this for my solo acoustic guitar act before buying a proper PA speaker. If I plug into this guy now, I think the first power chord will kick out a plum of dust. )

I would love to hear folks take on the sonic beauty of the 15” guitar speaker. I always thought the 15 was a bass guitar speaker. Then due to interest in Stevie Ray Vaughan's music and equipment I learned about the Fender Vibroverb which in 1964 came with a 15" speaker and I became interested. I first had a baffle made for my Dr. Z backline 2x12 cabinet for a single 1x15. That was good but I think that cabinet is too large. It just didn't have the clarity and focus I thought i could have. But I haven't found a bad speaker yet putting them into the smaller Dr. Z 1x12 cabinets. It's like everything else, people have different tastes and goals so it's not a magic bullet or anything. I Just really like it and wanted to share. It was very fun and rewarding to make the baffles also. I like taking on projects and making things.

I love everything about this. Patrick B, if you have something like the Radial Cabbone, you can even switch in real-time while you're playing and get the most direct/immediate comparison possible. I've done this, and I swear by it for finding my favorite speaker with any particular amp. My $0.02: I've had a couple iterations of 1x15 cabinets paired with various stuff--always with the Legend 151--and I LOVE how elegant & full the sound is. It's too bad most people dismiss a 1x15 (but yeah, they're not always small or lightweight, so I get it). That was the cab for my EZG-50 when I had one. I'd be interested to hear your favorite speaker(s) among this selection...

I'd be interested to hear your favorite speaker(s) among this selection... I wanted separate cabs for each speaker so I could do just as you describe, switch in real time while I'm playing. Like I said so far I haven't found a bad speaker. I really like the vintage JBL D130F for my Vibroverb. I started this journey wanting to find cool speakers for my EZG-50 not because I was not satisfied but rather just to see what I could find and having some time and money wanted to explore and experiment. Then suddenly I decided to build a Fender Vibroverb so I haven't been playing through the EZG-50 lately and I'm concentrating on the Vibroverb. All four of the 15" speakers I've tried are very good and I could live with any of them. The JBL is just so smooth and lacking of anything harsh. They have great treble but no harshness which is kinda hard to find. They are old speakers and so it's safe to assume they are broken in so maybe that's part of it. But they are heavy. My first Vibroverb combo with the JBL is 53 pounds. 2nd place and what I have in one of my Vibroverbs right now (I now have built 2 of the amps) is the Weber Neomag 15". It sounds a lot like the JBL D130f and is lighter, maybe 1/2 the weight of the JBL. Plus I like not having to worry about damaging an old vintage JBL so it kinda gives me that peace of mind when I take the amp to open mics and leave it on stage for others to play through. I have a 5th speaker the EV EVM 15L that I've read Stevie Ray vaughan switched to from the JBLs because the EV was more robust. But alas I need to get it repaired. It has some voice coil rubbing. I'm gonna send it to Ted Weber for a recone. It's a monster speaker too and probably heavier than the JBL so it will have to be outstanding to justify putting into the Vibroverb. But I just want to try it.

Thanks for the info, good to know it sounds good in the existing cabinet. I remember the first time I plugged into a 15" speaker and it was eye opening. Then again there was an old Supro that had one and it sounded great there too. I have a friend that played loud rock with an Ampeg V2 head into 2 EV SRO 15" speakers, and of course I believe JH used 15" speakers in his Fender rig at Winterland (also Sunn cabs at Hollywood Bowl)

Not to burst your bubble, but I don't think Doc would sell enough to make it worth his while. Not that I'm suggesting he should, but Isn't it really just a matter of the same cab with a different baffle board?

Hey! By the way. Your cabs look really nice! I say forget the switcher. Just wire 'em all up and let 'em rock! They look like they're ready.

I need to maybe paint the baffles black and add grill cloth. Definitely need the cloth. I'm paranoid I'm gonna damage the speakers. The Birch is pretty and i hate to paint over it. Might just cover one as is and see how it looks.

I recently converted a Twin Reverb cab to hold a 15 and a Vibrolux chassis. Basically it is a Vibroverb. I have a JBL D-130F in it with a real JBL cone which is very important to the tone. It is not optimal for rock tones but does classic country very well. Think Don Rich and the Buckaroos. My all-time favorite 15 is the Altec-Lansing 418 which has an alnico mag. It also has a 3 inch voice coil which, I think, is more guitar-friendly than the JBL's 4 inch VC.

I think it's great for blues and blues rock.

Cabs look great! If you get a chance, try out the Celestion Fullback. I have one in my Ampeg. It's a great 15" speaker.

JDesign has a 115 on his Reverb shop that caught my eye. I won't get a 115, but I loved the two-tone on this guy. He does a Z style 112 that I'm pretty sure has the same dimensions of what you used that could become a 115.

When I was younger, my main rig was a ‘67 Fender Vibrolux Reverb 2x10 combo on top of a 1x15 closed back cabinet (I think the speaker was a Jensen). The 15 gave that rig some real authority on the bandstand.

Very nice!! Are you making a head version of the Vibroverb or just using the cabs for testing and will eventually move the chosen speaker to a combo?
I might have to try one with the EZG and/or my Pure 64 for a Vibroverb type feel.

I have two Vibroverb clones in 1x15 cabs so I'm testing to possibly move a new speaker into one or both of those cabinets. I can update that I just recently acquired two pristine EV EVM15L's and in the Dr. Z 1x12 they are amazing. I will have to put one of these into one of the Vibroverb combos.

Ran a 1X15 All through HS and College. Loved the sound. Used it with an old Fender and a Music man.
