This afternoon I was re-stringing my old Les Paul Junior for the first time in quite a while. I have a stash of foil packaged Ernie Ball strings, some of which I've probably had for four or five years, but stored, along with all my guitars, in the house. All was fine until I unwrapped the .011 string....rusty!! I opened another four packs until I found an .011 with no rust. All the other strings in each set were fine. So I now have four opened foil packs with just the rusty .011 missing, and I still have several more packs unopened. I've been using Ernie Ball for as long as I remember, and this is the first time I've ever had a problem. Grrrrrrr!!!

Wow! I would say that’s pretty unusual for rust to be isolated to 1 string in a pack across several sets.

Wow! I would say that’s pretty unusual for rust to be isolated to 1 string in a pack across several sets. That's what I thought too, Russell. Ernie Balls UK distributor is Strings & Things, so I think a quick 'phone call is in order. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Yeah, that's strange that it would be isolated to one string, and the same one/gauge. Interested to see what they say.

I had a similar experience with acoustic strings a few years ago. I always use Elixir Nano's, but for a change I tried another brand of coated strings. While restringing my guitar I had the ball end unwind on the B string. "Dayum!" So I go to open the 2nd set of the same brand and the same thing happened. I contacted the company re this (with the lot # on the box), not really expecting much, but having had excellent customer service with almost every music related product I have bought I thought they may compensate me for the issue. Nope, just a reply saying we "will look into it." I never used or recommended that brand since.

Rusty Strings. Good band name. What style would it most work for? I’m thinking blue grass.

When I lived in the Caribbean, I changed the strings on my acoustic every Thursday, before my 3 weekend gigs. The only strings I could buy that didn't rust in the packaging were D'Addario, in the plastic package with anti-corrosion solution. I bought them in 10-packs, twenty at a time.

Alan, I had a similar experience, but I can't remember which manufacturer was "guilty." It wasn't Ernie Ball, though.

So I 'phoned the distributor this afternoon. They really only deal with the trade, but I had a good conversation with a sales guy, and we established, from a sticker on the packs I had opened, that they were actually manufactured in 2012/13. So I couldn't really expect any help from the distributor.
Anyways, I've now ordered a quantity of individual 11 gauge strings, from an online retailer, to replace the affected by rust. Should arrive in the mail tomorrow (Saturday).

Not really that big of a deal if it is a plain string and minor surface rust. Just rub the string down with Scotchbrite. The red grade.

I still wonder why it's isolated to only the .11 strings. What was different about them than the other two plain strings?

I still wonder why it's isolated to only the .11 strings. What was different about them than the other two plain strings? I figure that it must have been an isolated problem in production with a batch of 11's, or perhaps with the raw material, Dave. I've been using Ernie's forever and never had a problem before. I think that the batch of strings I bought must have been sitting in storage for a while before I bought them. Anyway, I don't anticipate further issues, so I'll continue using them....we'll see.
