My first "major" purchase when I got out of college and had a real job (earning real money) was a then-new 1981 Strat (bought in spring of '82. Blonde. Gorgeous. Guitar of my then-dreams. I still have it and it's still my #1 electric, despite all the other very nice guitars that have joined it "on the wall" since. Having fallen victim over the years to the drumbeat that OEM pups suck and only the aftermarket ones are any good, I've swapped out the original pickups for Seymour Duncans, other Fenders, and Fralin. The most recent were the Fralin Vintage Hots. Amazingly, I kept the orignial pickups and pick guard in a box and haven't lost it despite moving back and forth across the country a couple times.
Bottom line -- I reinstalled the OEMs after just not bonding with the Fralins (and gave them a good 20 month shot). Something about the OEMs -- they deliver "the Strat sound," without noise, with that beautiful "quack" in the 2nd position. Neck isn't too dark, and the tone controls (for neck and middle) really let you adjust things nicely. So, I sold the Fralins and think I'm just going to stay with the OEMs.
Now, what in the world will I spend the Fralin $$ on (yeah, I'm looking at you Alnico Gold).

Sounds good is good! That’s a friend and local shop owner’s view. I appreciate him breaking that out while I’m standing in his shop contemplating buying something or a modification that I don’t need, lol.

Interesting....I've kept the same pickups on my Strats for at least twenty years or more now, tried alternatives but sticking with the originals as they sound fine and are easily adjustable....no point in changing.
