I've had my 2005 Maz 18 Reverb for a couple of months and didn't know the age of the tubes. I had one microphonic reverb tube that was replaced immediately and then replaced the JJ power tubes with 6n14n's. I noticed a lot of improvement. Last night, I replaced the preamp tubes with mixed results. I liked the JJ's that were in it okay but they can be punchy and a bit muffled. Based on recommendations here, I tried Tung Sol 12AX7's in both V1 and V2 but it was too bright and 'clicky' when strumming. There was a tick noise when playing staccato on the higher strings. I put a new JJ ECCC83S back in V2 and it tamed it quite a bit, but I still had to turn the Treble and Cut way down. The amp does seem to have more character and subtleties but the highs can be strident when played hard. The JJ's are duller and more punchy, so it's a trade-off. I'll leave it like this for awhile and see if I can dial it in.
I may be pulling the head soon and and sending it to the Doc for the MKII mod and to add an FX loop, but it'll be hard living without it for a month.

I just tried putting a 5751 in the V1 spot. I really like the difference. It seems to balance things a lot, especially with pedals for overdrive.

I think that is Doc suggestion, the ECC83S in V1 and the Tung Sol 12AX7's in V2. I got my 6n14n's along with the MKII update, so I can't pull those two apart, but I definitely had to relearn how to adjust all the controls. I would check with Don before you send it in if you are on a schedule to get it back. From my own experience and what I've seen from others I think 5-6 weeks is more the norm.

Thanks! I'll try to swap them. And then I'll try a 5751 if that doesn't work.

I have an Avatar 30 in my amp, which is the G12H that's broken in. I've heard the G12H can have a harsh top end. I'm wondering if that could that be my issue more than the tubes.
Is anyone running a different speaker?

Is anyone running a different speaker? I have a couple posts near the top of the Maz 18 section here where I talk about my speaker shoot out. My G12H that came with the amp was heavy on the low end, warm, but almost muffled compared to a Greenback and a Alnico. There might be vast differences between out G12H’s, but that seems unlikely. Mine is really broken in well and I know that Avatar comes that way. I'm editing to add this: Since I wrote the above I received my Carmen Ghia head and a new cab for a damaged Swart STR. This left me with a usable cab to put my G12H in. I found with both the Ghia and the STR that it was heavy on the high end. The big difference on both of these amps is that they do not have full tone stacks, they both only have a single tone knob. So I'll take back what I said about the G12H, but it in terms of your issue with the Maz and this speaker makes me wonder if there isn't more tweaking you can do with the tone stack or as you've been asking about the tubes.

You know the "new g12h uk made seems to be working in my newer maz 18 reverb...found to be a good match in jetta as well...Not so with older speaker that have come with other maz 18's.Thought I would be curbing it for another alnico but not so...getting it out live will be determining factor.I have et-65 in other maz that sounds great...live/home.Ruby is in maz 18 nr...will be interesting to see were you land on this...

My worthless 2 cents:
I'm not a big fan of the G12H30 speaker. It has scooped mids and lots of crispy high end, and big bottom. It's great for recording or playing home alone. But if you play in a live band...I don't care for it. Because of the recessed mids, I feel it gets lost in the mix. Mids are where it's at for guitar.

I concur with the previous post. I tried to like the G12H30, but just couldn't make it work - especially live.

What are y'all using for speakers?
In another forum someone recommended the Eminence Texas Heat.

I had a refurbished Alnico that is somewhere near a silver bell from the 60’s (close to a Blue). Sounds great.
Very similar sound is the MojoTone BV25M which is a Greenback clone.
I liked these both better than the G12H
