Probably a daft question, but here goes...
I've owned my Maz 38 NR 2x10 for over 10 years, always sounded fantastic, still does. One of the power tubes went bad on me recently (looking from the back, numbering from left to right, it was number 3). It dawned on me when I realised that number 3 wasn't glowing, that number 4 never has. Is this normal? It sounds great, doesn't blow fuses, but number 4 doesn't glow like the other EL84's, regardless of the tube in there. The others are hot to the touch, number 4 is not cold, but it's not much more than warm. I guess it's possible that during a gig maybe it all warms up, but I never get the chance to check then!

Time for new power tubes man. 10 years is REALLY stretching it.

Yes, replace the power tubes with a matched quad.

Sorry, didn't make that clear. I've owned the amp for 10 years, but the tubes are replaced regularly - I aim for the every 300 hours of use mark. This is the first tube that ever let go before I replaced them all and retired the old tubes to the reserve bench. But the question is more about whether you can expect a consistent glow on all four or is this weird?

Sometimes the filaments are a bit difficult to see, but the fact that the tube was only warm to the touch means it was likely cold and was warmed by its neighbors which is surprising. Did it hum like mad?

Nope, no hum. Sounds as fab as ever...

Do you have an extra matched quad you can try?

Thanks for the replies folks. I did some tube swapping and turns out wherever I put the "cool" tube, it stayed cool. So I swapped it out and now have four glowing EL84's. Nice! The weird thing is it sounded the same and no fuses blew. How long it would have continued like that is anyones guess I suppose. The moral of the story is it's worth having a visual check every now and then to make sure you've got a full compliment of warm tubes!
