A friend has an older Z 2x10 with the speakers side by side, I liked it so much that I tracked down one exactly like it. I love that fact that it is no as tall as other cabinets. When did Dr Z make these cabinets and stop making these cabinets?

do you have a picture of the cab you are talking about? The Zbest cabs (current production) are 2x12 with the speakers side by side and have feet on them so you can stand them up or lay them down. Todd

Those are known around here as "shorty" cabs... I think they disappeared at least before 2010 or so, maybe before that. You could get a 1x12 or a 2x10 in that same cab, if I remember correctly. But yeah, people do like them for the same reasons you're saying--they're a little more compact.
Perhaps Doc will chime in, but I suspect the change to the taller/bigger cabinet had to do with streamlining & making those cabs similar/same size as the actual *combo" amps.

Bubs, way way back in the day the doc made a 1x12 cab that measured 19x19. I’m not sure when he stopped making them but I believe that’s when the “shorty” horizontal cabs came out. The 1x12 and the 2x10 shorties are the same size. They were made up until the convertible 1x12 and 2x10 came out and I’m gonna say that would’ve been around 2009-2010 or so. To complicate things even more, when the 2x10 convertible cab first came out the 10s were oriented side by side for a little while then later changed to diagonal placement.
I have one of the old old 19x19 1x12s and two of the shorties, one of each. They’re great cabs and are light and handy, and I think they sound great.

Thanks everyone, I love the "Shorty" 2x10. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a Blonde 1x12 "Shorty. My Therapy will be here today, but i'm more than likely going to move my Princeton and purchase a Blonde Z28 or Ghia. I liked the Ghia that I played very much, but I also know that I like 6v6's more so we will see. Knowing me, I'll end up with both at some point.

Good luck with the search. Unless someone on Z-Talk has a Shorty CAB for sale, they are hard to come by. I may have seen only a hand full for sale in the past five years. They are compact, portable and do sound good for their size. This may help, if Reverb or eBay does not turn one up. Search All Craigslist. www.searchtempest.com/

Back in "the day" that is what I used for my Z amp heads (Z28, Maz 18, Rx jr) - a shorty 1x12 and 2x10. I think/feel that the shorty cabs weigh as much as the newer cabs. I had the latest version of the convertible 1x12 for the Remedy I had and they all felt about the same, but the shorty cabs were easy to grab and go! Because they are rare it is hard to find matching ones (see avatar), but you could always put matching grill cloth on em. Good luck on your search!

I have a 2x10 Shorty that uses the "Lens" design as mentioned in an earlier thread. ztalk.proboards.com/thread/5879/explain-lens-dr-2x10-cabsI also have a 4x10 with the Bassman style baffleboard. I use the shorty for almost 90% of my gigs. The 4x10 makes my amp sound a bit warmer but it doesn't cut through the mix like the 2x10. I suppose part of that is the design of the box, but also that the amp runs in either 8 ohm for the 2x10 or 4 ohm for the 4x10. The 4x10 also makes for a lot of fun with snare drum resonation because of the bottom end. David

I'm absolutely in love with the "Shorty". I will be on the look out for a 1x12 in Blonde. The plan is to get a Ghia or a Z28 to run with some pedals, it will be awesome!

A Ghia with a 1X12 Gold shorty cab will bring tears to your eyes! Throw a Tonker in it like mine currently has and it will also bring tears to the eyes of anyone else nearby!

I just had a Tonker in an Blues Breaker Style Cab. In a close back, it was super high head room and clean, it an open back it aloud some grit and would beef up any amp. The Texas Heat is another one that surprised me.

Hi,
Getting back on the Dr. Z saddle again. I'm interested in the smaller housing studio combo amps with the dimensions of 19 ¼” W, 19 ½” H, 10 ½ ” D. My question is.... was there or is there currently a extension cab made with the same 19 ¼” in Width dimensions? I want a perfect width match for my studio combo amp. I see the 1X10 cabs being currently sold with the 17" inch width... but that comes up short for me. I have also viewed pictures on the Z-forum of a perfect cab match for the studio combo amps. However, I don't know if those are privately built by someone etc... Please, explain or point me in a direction:)...

I was just coming back to this thread to say I was going to have a "Shorty" made since a 1x12 has not come up. To the question above a matching 1x12 to your Studio cab was not done at Dr Z. Going through all the information provided and other threads, those dimension have never come up. I hope that answers your questions.
Guys, I am going to have a "Shorty" built, I just want to make sure I have the dimensions correct for a "Shorty". 22 3/4" Wide X 13 3/4" Tall X 10" Deep. I love that these are short and stacking them they are not that tall.

You might check with Peter Mather at Mather Cabs as I believe he was Docs cabinet maker at the time the shorty was made. At any rate, he’ll definitely have the dimensions.

Mather Cabs did get back to me. He did say that he is not the one that supplied these cabs but can and will build them to my specs. He did give me a rough estimate, I just replied with a couple questions. One being the back, I thought that I would like a convertible back, but as a convertible it is going to be a two piece back. So I had some questions about the split size and how much will be open when it is open. Frankly the price was reasonable, special for it not being one of his standard cabs.

Mather is one of the few "BEST" small business out there and his customer service is excellent. You will be very pleased with your cab.

I'm thinking esthetically along the lines of the Nova. Black and Oxblood, but if I leave the piping black it would go with anything I put on top of it.

Done deal, I was a little nervous about the back, but we went with a 60/40 split so I can close them if I want. I had some issues on a few gigs were I was stuck against a brick wall, or even the back of the cabs pointed stage left toward an the pool tables or seating area. I had been jus sticking foam in the back of the cabs, but this should do the trick. The less stuff I have to carry the better. I like to roll in, run cables and be done.
So standard size Shorty, Nova Cosmetics, 60/40 convertible back, and I had the option of going with Pine and I like Pine so I did it. They are going to built the same way with the glued in baffle.
