Snappy New Year to you all,
I have a question about OT's, probably been discussed around here before, but I still haven't found what I'm looking for (copyright Bono). All other considerations aside, is it generally true that you get better tone from your amp if you use the highest OT impedance tap, with the matching speaker of course?
I have a 2011 Remedy that I'm putting into a 1x12 combo cab from Sourmash. Beautiful in British green BTW. Based on my question above, should I choose an 8 or a 16 ohm output/speaker? I'm not interested in hooking this up to an extension cabinet.
Thanks for your thoughts,
Swampcooler

Mind you, this is my opinion. Any difference you hear between different impedance speakers can be attributed more to manufacturing tolerances than to impedance.

There are several posts on Z-Talk covering OT 8 Ohm vs 16 Ohm tap. I believe it is who you talk to, as some say they hear a difference and others do not.
I have both 16 Ohm and 8 Ohm Cab and can not hear a difference. I lean towards more OT windings.
However, if you ever want to convert to 2x12, two parallel 16 ohm speakers would equate to an 8 ohm Cab with a vintage sound, vs two series 8 ohm speakers equates a 16 ohm Cab, with a Modern sound. (parallel vs series wiring)
Also, the Brake Lite and Air Break are more accurate match with 16 ohm Amp tap and speaker combination.

Yeah, I subscribe to the more windings theory as well. I think I read that in Mr. Weber's fine book.
BTW, how do I upload a picture of this very elegant amp? I tried the edit feature, clicked the photo button, tried drag and drop, nothing.
Thanks again.

To post here you need to use a third-party site like IMGUR (it's free and easy to use) or photoshop (expensive and not so user friendly).

I can't tell the difference between 8 ohm speakers on an 8 ohm tap or 16 ohm speakers on a 16 ohm tap. Doc nearly always delivers his amps with 8 ohm loads, stock.
Dr.Z has a fantastic ear for tone and it seems to me that if there really is a difference he would be shipping his amps with 16 ohm speakers, right?

Interesting conversations about more OT winding = better tone. It’s very different than the Ken Fischer/Trainwreck philosophy of less wire and shorter runs of wire gives better tone. I think of the OT as a impedance matching device. It is a pretty important device in the tone for sure, although I think quality components and careful winding has a lot to do with that. Interesting. Hey, Ken F. said he could hear the difference between different colored wires. I think that is more of a curse than a blessing. 😂
