I have a Love / Hate relationship with my Ray..... It's my favorite clean and semi-clean amp of ALL time. There is no better clean amp in the world, IMO....but I don't like dirt pedals with it.
I've tried different cabs, several different Alnico & Ceramic speakers, different tubes, different settings, ect.....But ultimately, my dirt pedals just don't sound good with it. I've had this battle since 2006, with my very first Ray - and the reason I keep selling/trading them.
Until I tried an Alnico Cream (last week).
The Alnico Cream rolls of the some of that hi-fi top end of the Ray and adds more mids, to help with dirt pedals. It still has that classic Alnico feel and compression, but much smoother on the top end and a little punchier in the mids. It still sounds like a Ray, but only "warmer" (if that make sense).
If I were still playing 75% country, the Gold would be perfect....But, playing 75% rock (with some modern rock), the Alnico Cream is the speaker for me now!
I know there's a post from me on here about the Tone Tubby Alnico Red.....But, the Alnico Cream is even warmer than the TT and now my favorite speaker with the Ray.
I haven't tried it with any of my other amps......But plan on it in the near future.

I just ordered another one for my, wait for it...AB763 Combo. bloozeman would cringe, but I love that speaker in that Fender Circuit Amp. I have two identical amps that are 40 Watt AB763's with 6L6's. One is in a Head sitting on a closed back 112 with a Cream Alnico, the other is a Mather Princeton Tall Boy with the AB763 and 6L6's. The combo has a TT Purple Haze, which is fantastic, but I am anxious to see if the Cream stays a little tighter than the Purple Haze. The open back cab seems a bit too open. We'll see soon.

Congrats Telejas! And thanks for the info - I may have to go that direction someday as well.

You kind of lost me there, not sure what you mean? Plus, the Gold is already gone (traded it for the cream).. Do you mean something like a speaker simulator, or reactive load box? My next gear purchase is going to be a reactive load box, but don't have one yet.

Now that you have had some time with it, are you still liking that Cream Spk?

Now that you have had some time with it, are you still liking that Cream Spk? The Cream is turning out to be one of my favorite speaker! Still love it with my Stingray, but also got a "metal" amp.. a 5150 III and run it through my Z cab with the Cream and LOVE It! I *may* be selling my Stingray in the future so I can get a Wreck Jr??? We'll see though?

And my Ray is still using a pair of Blues - and it totally rocks. I need to get a sound clip up here...

But either GAS is getting a hold of me or I'm doing some thinking, and realize the Z-Wreck worked with pedals much better, and had a great clean tone as well. I will probably regret getting rid of the Stingray, as its rare and has been one of those amps that I have wanted since it was introduced (before changing to Stang Ray)... But, I probably need to be more practical with what I need (and want).

I happen to have a Creamback (not Alnico Cream) in a cab I used with my Maz 18. Love that speaker with my Maz. I tried the Creamback with my Stangray and really like it as well.
But you've got me thinking now... How would the Alnico Cream sound vs the Creamback? I'm currently using a single Blue with my Ray on 1/2 power. I was going to just get a Gold for when I use it on full power. But maybe I should checkout the Alnico Cream??
