You've all seen my story on the SRZ 65 that Joe Walsh used on the Hell Freezes Over tour and during the Eagles induction into the RNR HOF (you can see it in the video). I received it in really bad shape from the store as a result of some poor shipping. Long story short - I sent it back and got my money back. I got a note Wednesday telling me that their amp tech had repaired the amp and asked if I was still interested in the amp. He sent some pictures and it looks like the tech did a really good job straightening everything out. The broken valance will still have a hairline crack in it but it is difficult to see if you don't know it's there. He said that the amp sounds great with no extra noise. He offered it to me with a 30% reduction in the price.
What do you guys think - should I repurchase it as a piece of rock history or just let it go?

I'd snatch that puppy in a heart beat! I know a guy that can help with the crack.

Snag it! Can you post the pictures of the repair?

Personally, I would let it go. Lol, I would still be seeing the same amp that showed up destroyed the first time I got it 😊
Your experience spooked me from buying used (I have only ever bought a couple used Zs that were minty). There's a red Rx ES for sale in Texas now and when I asked the guy if he had a Z shipping box he said no but the place where he would have it packed used foam peanuts! I pictured your amp and then ran as fast as I could !
Id keep your money for some of Doc's newer prototypes 😉

It's not the shipping that scares me, it's what the seller will try to ship it in! If he had a Z box for the RX ES I likely would have bought it....it is red 😄

I'd have a big problem getting the original shipped (completely trashed) condition out of my mind, but given your collection, you might be in a better state of mind to overlook those earlier images given the amp's history. I'm pretty certain? they will properly package it the next time.

I say to do it... but only because it's actually Joe's amp that was used on tour & in the induction (which I didn't realize about the amp when you first posted the story about it!) and because your muZeum would be a proper place for it to spend its retirement. If it didn't have that provenance, though, I'd probably say "nah."

My take is that (a) I’d be concerned about HOW their tech fixed it (and what else may still be wrong, or fail in the future), (b) I’d factor in the total cost of a trip back to Doc’s OR for an inspection/repair, and most of all (c) without some type of letter certifying this is, in fact, Joe’s amp used as described (preferably signed by Joe), it really is just a cool story and won’t (or shouldn’t) affect the price.
And I’d have a long discussion about how they are going to ship it.

And I’d have a long discussion about how they are going to ship it. I have no reason to doubt the provenance. "Modded for Joe Walsh" was written on turret board at Doc's; Doc verified that he indeed made it for Joe and later sent me a note saying that he noticed that it was in a clip on one of his AMA that was from RNR Hall of Fame (it was the Eagles induction into the HOF where they played Hotel California). And I'm really gun-shy about the shipping!!!

Do you have a Z head shipping box that would fit it? If not, could Doc get you one? If so, send the empty box to him and have him use it to send to you. That way you will at least know the packing was adequate. The used market, especially for high powered amps is pretty dead. If you want it (I think I know you enough to say you do)knock another 10 to 15% off and explain that there could be problems with it in the future, you will need to send it to the factory to make sure everything is up to snuff and all the repairs are up to factory standards, etc., so it will cost you some cash after the sale. Never hurts to make a counter offer. All he can say is no. If he does, wait a bit, he may change his mind when no one else bites. Then if you still want it, give him a call. I'm betting he takes it, or makes you a better offer than he has.

Just curious Mike - if you do buy it will you take it to the Z shop for scrutinizing the repair to make sure it is correct? Just a thought.

I agree with Marc. Try to get a factory shipping box with the foam inserts from Doc. If the provenance is solid, I would add the amp to the collection. It should be preserved.

1) I agree with trying to get foam inserts to fit the amp. It wouldn't be all that far for you to drive to Cleveland to get it. (or have Doc ship you and empty shipping box)
2) Where is the amp now? Is it in driving distance? 1 tank of gas away? Is the amp's location near anything you wanted to visit? Make it a small adventure.

Are there any Z-bro's nearby its current location? Perhaps a "bucket brigade" of sorts... hand-carried in possession of Z-natics from origin to destination. Kind of like how the Olympic torch travels across the country? (Not terribly logistically viable, but hey that'd be cool, wouldn't it?)

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! The amp is in Fort Collins Colorado so it is definitely more than a tank of gas away I might see if I have a box that I can send to them to ship it back here. Good idea. It's about the size of the EMS - it's worth seeing if it fits.

No amp that was damaged like that is worth that much hassle, no matter what the Doc wrote on the board or who played Hotel California (yuck) through it. If they can't properly package and ship it the second time around, after what happened the first time, they shouldn't be in business anyway. Let them sit on it for a year and get back to you with a better price and no fault return period.
Maybe I just woke up grumpy this AM. That thing was one step above garbage when you got it the first time.

I kinda come down with Ridgeback.
It might be one thing if the doc had repaired it, but their tech-who knows what he did?
The other thing is, how much of the original amp is left? That chassis might have been straightenable but it would never look right. And if were replaced, then how much provenance is left? I’m reminded of the car shows on TV where they routinely slide a new chassis under parts of an old body in the restoration process. At what point is it no longer the same car? I guess that’s up to the owner , but I’m waiting for the day when they start a restoration off with an original hubcap and build it up from there.
But I’m a world class cynic, so there’s that.

Send a Z shipping box and they cover shipping charges.
Well, it wouldn't hurt to ask.

So, this thing was basically trashed and they 'fixed' it and now they have it on the floor as if nothing happened (I don't see any indication on the sticker or any other comment that this amp was rehabbed from near destruction)?
Sorry, but just says way too much about the seller to me. I wouldn't touch this with a 10-foot pole.

I have to admit that they seem to have done a pretty good repair job from the pictures. I'm sure they will be able to sell it to someone at some point if they don't disclose the "before" pictures. Good luck with your decision.

$999.99 - %30. So $700. If they cover shipping in a good box, I would get it. But I like restoring old stuff.
