Been in love with my Z-Plus for over a year now. Amazing amp. Only problem is that I need more volume AND headroom. Been going over it in my head, been considering a Wreck, Maz 38, Jetta, and the only other amp I can think that would give me kore volume and headroom while not straying too far from the Z-Plus would be the Z-Lux. It’ll give me all the cleans I want, since I get all my dirt from pedals. I play mostly with humbuckers, so I need an amp that won’t breakup in a band/gigging situation. Last time I played the Z-Lux, I wasn’t entirely impressed, but at the time, I was after an amp that can get dirty. My needs are different now. I WILL NOT get rid of the Z-Plus. This amp is for a specific purpose...gigging. I need something with more wattage, volume, and clean headroom to keep up with a rhythm guitarist who has a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (he has no ear for good tone).

Sure sounds like you are describing either the Lux or the Maz 38 to me. The Lux will give you that big bottle tone along with tremolo and 'verb with all of the clean headroom you should need. To me, the Lux is a clean machine that affords you the pure, unmolested tone of the guitar and the cable connecting them. For heavier tones without a pedal, I'd look at others in the Z lineup as that's not what the Lux was designed for. It's an awesome amp for sure.

I think you'll find the Z-Lux to be an excellent gigging amp, especially if you're running humbuckers and getting your dirt from pedals, which is what I do. At 40-watts it'll fill a good-sized room un-miked and keep up with a hard-hitting drummer. And while the Hotrod Deluxe is a pretty loud amp, the Z-Lux will hang with it and then some. Here I'm running it clean at full power with a Gretsch White Falcon into a Jetter GS-124 for dirt, which is a medium-gain, soft-clipping OD. I like the breakup I'm getting--apologies for the playing and vocals, as always.

That White Falcon is a tone machine.

I’ve got the opportunity to get a good deal on a brand new Z-Lux head, but I’m gonna wait until after my band’s rehearsal this Saturday. I’m going to try to position my amp elsewhere in our rehearsal space (garage), and see how it sounds. I just love the Z-Plus so much, I can’t bring myself to leave it behind. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll order the Z-Lux.

I’m coming from a z-28 which is a wonderful amp. I was having issues with early break up with the z-28 at gig volumes. None of that with the zlux. The zlux sounds great at home and even better cranked. It’s my desert island amp.

Jon, you're killin' it with that rig. Sounds GREAT, brother! I've been using my Z-Lux for all of our Christmas Concert gigs this season, all with my Les Paul Custom. Been mainly using a Rockbox Boiling Point for dirt, and it sounds really nice. Now you've got me jonesing for a White Falcon again. Thanks.

Yeah--I tried out multiple versions of the White Falcon at Dave's before I picked out the one in the video. The '59 and the Steven Stills both had these weird Gretsch roller bridges that are real sustain killers (and still don't stay in tune), so I went with the Player's Edition, which I liked a lot. It's got a pretty chunky neck and just the regular Filtertrons, not TV Joneses, but they had more output and punch than the vintage-style TVs--I didn't expect to like them as much, but doing A/B/C comparisons they blew the TVs out of the water. I also tried a Rev Horton Heat, which I ended up buying a few months later, and a blue Falcon which I also liked a lot and is still on my radar. Love the current generation of Japanese-made Gretsch hollow-bodies--fit and finish are first rate, and they're a great fit for what my band's doing these days.

I have a Japanese Gretsch with the hs filtertrons and like you said, the punch, output, and frequency range of these pickups is astounding. Beautiful cleans, and can grind so good! My favorite guitar! I’ve considered going all Gretsch lately

Fine playing and vocals there Jon.....and tone to die for! I've never owned a Gretsch but maybe I need to reconsider! Good rhythm section too.

Great communication, rock-solid tempo-wise, no drama, awesome folks to hang out with. And yeah--you definitely need a Gretsch.
